John Stewart, who arrived recently at Stewart from Victoria, expressed his disappointment at not being able to go on this summer with a prospecting campaign started last year. The Intention had been to put three parties in the field this summer using airplanes to a great extent but the plans had to be abandoned owing to the general slump now affecting the country. The delay is but temporary, however, and prospecting will be resumed just as soon as conditions warrant. In the meantime, the Stewart brothers are arranging for the carrying out on necessary assessment work on, claims staked last year at the head of American Creek. These claims are said to be very promising." Dr. Joseph T. Mandy, resident mining engineer, states that, with the possible exception of the AUIn district, there Is more mining activity now in the Portland Canal district than In any other part of the north. William Deans. MA, of Ocean Falls, gave an Interesting account of work In the Prince Rupert presbytery of the United Church. Mr. Deans was elected chairman of the presbytery at the spring meeting held last May. The Prince Rupert presbytery Mr. Deans stated, is 1000 miles in length, 300 miles in width and has an area of 300,000 square miles The population Is widely scattered and this means that Prince Rupert will be a missionary presbytery for many years to come: at the present time Ocean Falls is the only self-supporting churoh within its boundaries. This church declared for self-support five yean ago. at the time ot union. The United Church In Ocean Falls Is the direct fruit of the Marine Mission and some of the pioneers still recall the days when Capt. William Oliver and the late Dr. R. W. Large of Bella Bella ministered to the spiritual and physical needs of the community. Marine Missions The Marine Mission, which h ronrlv all in Prince Rupert presbytery, covers a large coast line. Th regular schedule of the mission ship 'Thomas Crosby," under Capt Rev. Robert C. Scott, calls for more than 900 miles of actual cruising each month. As sometimes special demands arc made upon the boat it is not always possible to keep the schedule and adjustments have to be made from time to time. The Queen Charlotte Island Marine Mission is under the direction of Rev. Stanley V. H. Redman. On this mission is situated the moat westerly church in the Dominion. This Is a small church on Hippo Island, built largely by the efforts of the veteran Capt. Wm. Oliver. There are four medical missions under the United Church In the Prince Rupert pre3bytery. These are at Port Simpson, Hazelton, Bella Bella and- Bella Coola. The first-named was the pioneer hospital and has a most Interesting history. It Is a monument of the faith and courage of lts( founder the late Dr. A. E. Bolton.' Pioneer Hospitals The superintendents of the hospitals at Hazelton and Bell Bella are well known throughout British Columbia. At Hazelton Dr. II. C. Wrlnch. M.LA., has pioneered in this work and still directs the affairs at the hospital. This year a new building will be erected In which the Dominion and provlnclaj governments as well as the United Church of Canada, have a part. At Bella Bella Dr. George E. Darby Is In charge of the R. W. Large Memorial Hospital, built a few years ago as a memorial of the pi oneer medical missionary of that district. At the Port Simpson hospital! Dr. Oeddes Large, son of the late Dr. R. W. Large, Is following in hli father's footsteps as the medical superintendent. There are two supplementary hospitals, one at Rivers Inlet and the other at Port Es-Ungton. used during the fishing season. The Woman's Missionary Society have a small hospital at Atlln, with two women workers. The United Church was asked to take over the hospital at Queen Charlotte, where Dr. O. A. C. Roberts Is In charge, but the board was not able to undertake the work and Dr. Roberts is carrying on with what help he can secure from time to time. .Indian Missions There arc fourteen missions to Indians within the bounds of the presbytery, the principal of which are Port Blmpson, Bella Bella, Port Essmgton, Bella Coola and Kltamaat. The pioneer work of the i late Dr. Thomas Crosby reads like; a romance of modern missions and the stdry of his1 life-hasi been anW nspiratlon to' many." i " '-'' In the Yukon Territory there are stations at Dawson and Whlto-horee, but owing to the redistribution of population only one min ister, Rev. W. B. Mcintosh, remains! In the North this summer. In Brl-I tlsh Columbia there are ministers' at Anyox, Stewart, Prince Rupert,' Prince Rupert East, Terrace, Haz-, elton and Ocean Falls. Besides these there are missions to thV Orientals at various points, with a settled Japanese pastor at Ocean Falls. ismsiaiiKBiBttm l . t til n a 'm- The picture you have been waiting for.
