Mr. Dore reviewed the whole field of telegraphic werk and ventured the opinion that the radio telephone was not likely to replace the wire, at least for many years to come. The very fact that a new speaking cable was being constructed across the Atlantic indicated that wireless competition was not feared. In opening, Mr. Dore told of the attempt about sixty years ago to string a wire by way of Haxeltcn and Alaska to Russia It was built only 30 miles pact Hazelton when vork stopped and has never been resumed. Tremendous strides had been made In telegraphic work. Mr. Dore ! said. Today 16 messages are sent! over 003 wire at tUt same time and over the transatlantic cable 900 words a minute are sent. An aver-, aye of 52,000 mrasaf.es a day go by , cable across the Atlantic. The ra-! diophones average only 50 calls a 1 day. Mr. Dore told of the wonderful progress of the telephones in South American countries and then dealt! with some of tbe difficulties en- ;ountered. One of the greatest was irth tremors. The greatest of chese had been tbe quake of last November. Usually when a cable breaks the ends am picked up only a few miles apart, but on this oc--sion they Varied from 85 to over 100 miles apart astt some of the cables were broken in a number of : laces. Experiences in the West Indies iroved very interesting. Mr. Dore was there when the Mount Pelee eruption took placed The cable ship Grappler went down there and no trace of her or of her crew was ever seen. Valentine Tea Is Successful A very successful Valentine tea and sale was held yesterday afternoon by the Ladies' Aid of First Presbyterian Church in the church parlors, which were decorated with red and white hearts and other seasonal 'adornments for the occasion, Mrs. Sam Maasey and Mrs. Berner having been in charge of the arrangement of these decorations. In the tea room Mrs. James Stop-son and Mrs. F. D. Rice were in charge, while Mrs. D. G. Stewart and Mrs. W. J. Nelson poured. As sisting in serving were Mrs. Thomas McMeekin, Mrs. J. R. Morrison, Miss Agnes Mackenzie, Miss Nessie Brown, Mrs. J. H. Carson, Mrs. C. A. Kirkendall and Mrs. W. L. San- aison. The home cooking table was in charge of Mrs. H. M. Foote and Mrs! Berner and Mrs. D. McLeod was cashier. During the afternoon there was a delightful musical program ar ranged by Mrs William Millar. There were vocal solos by Mrs. J. A. Teng and Mrs. Millar, piano so los by Billy Fuller and Miss Muriel Vance, violin solo by Miss Nellie Lawrence and recitations by Miss Adelia Thurber. Mrs. C. E. Radiophones Are Being Installed Ashore and Afloat The Board of Trade has received a notification from tbe Canadian Marconi Co. that there are about 100 radio telephone stations afloat and ashore using the radio telephone services of the company and one is to be installed now for the Chatham Sound Fishing ic Packing Co. at Humpback Bay, Porcher Island. Several canneries already use the service and it is expseied that more will install phones in the near future, HERBAL OINTMENT & MEDICINAL SOAP REDUCTION ASSESSMENT Townsite Co.
