Tells About j Power Company and Its Work Lcc Gordon, Purchasing Agent, Speaks Rotary Club onCpgts df. Providing Fowfr f 1 Showing that the money paid to ' a public utility corporation is paid ' out very largely in local services, j Lee Gordon, purchasing agent for j the Northern B. C. Power Company, I gave a very interesting address at the luncheon pf the Rotary Club yesterday afternoon; his subject being "The Consumer's Dollar." One of the interesting statements was that, owing to the large amount of money involved, the cost of capitalization was of necessity very heavy in a hydro-electric , plant. Also he mentioned that, while the stock of a merchant turned over several times in a year, the turnover of a power company occurred only once in several years. Of necessity the provision of power was monopolistic for if it were otherwise the costs would be higher, and the selling rates also higher. What was- required was. a fair rate for the service rendered and this could only be granted whqn there was no duplication of services. Mr. Gordon then went on to tell In detail some of the costs of operation of the local plant. This Included taxes, operation, mainten Week-End Specials Malkln's Best Orange Marmalade, 50c 4-lb. tin Clark's Pork Si Beans 2's 25c 2 tins Purity Quick China Oats 35c per pkg Malkin's Best Fruit for 35c salad fancy, 2'c. tin anowflake Pastry Flour 50c 10-lb. sack Evaporated White or Black 25c Figs. 2 lbs. The manner in which the expenses piled up proved somewhat of a surprise to Mr. Lee's audience. They were also Interested to know that in a steam'plant only one fourth of the latent power .was utilized whereas in hydro-electric D0 was saved. ; 1 At the conclusion Mr. Gordon was thanked for his address by President S. D. Johnston. Next week there will be no luncheon but the ladies will be guests of the members in the evening. The most popular number with the audience was the rollicking folk song "KJerringa me staven" (The Old Lady with the Stick). Other numbers involved sweet harmonies and exacting modulations. A male choir sang two selections which were well received. Assisting artists included Mrs. Jarvis McLeod who sang for her first number "Queen of Angels." Always popular, an encore was in-siled upon and Mrs. McLeod gave for this "My Lover is a Fisherman." Mrs. J. S. Black was Mrs. McLeod's accompanist.
