The paper is telling of the sound investments of municpal bonds and tells of the sinking funds provided to secure them. One municipality, it savs. has as hitrh as 5224,000 sinking fund surplus. The article does not men- uon wnicn municipality it is but lor the information of local readers we may mention that it is Prince Rupert This municipality stands at the head of all others in the amount of its sinking fund a fact that should be particularly interesting to those who are often talking blue rain. BRING ON THE TRIAL It is semi- officially announced thatlhe trial of the local election cases is to take place before $ jnry and not before a judge as requested by the defendaniPP&ttiorney General Pooley, it is understood, is suggestingJhat he may insist on a jury trial. We take strong issue with the attorney general in this matter. The average juryman is swayed by political emotions and has not learned to look at a case judicially In other words, he would not donsider a case on its merits so much as from his own political point of view. A judge would be different. He has been trained to decide a cage according to the strict legal aspect and does not worry about party politics. ' If the attorney general had been ijji&ding the men to take a jury trial, why not have brought them before the assizes which have nrat concluded. These assizes have been hurried through and the judge is away and now, if the election cases are to be tried before a jury they will have to wait until next spring or early summer and in the meantime the men who have been sent for trial will be under the shadow for many months. It is not pleasant to be out on bail, even on your own recognizance. The correct thing under the circumstances is for tho attorney general to send a judge here to take the case and get nd of it. He has the choice of judges and that should be sufficient advantage. If the cases are put off for a year, it would look as if the cases were considered very weak, for by that time Mr. Hanson will have attended two sessions of the Dominion Parliament ae member for the riding. . ; KA1EN MOTORS LTD.
