DAILY EDITION. cuir Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1919. = EES er a; Every Port Except Prince Rupert. A despatch from Ottawa to Vancouver says that Hon, CG. CG. Ballantyne expects to call for tenders for two new steamers to go on the triangular run connecting Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle and also has big plans for the foreign trade in all parts of Canada. Steamship lines, he says, will be established to Aus- tralia, China, Japan, and Possibly India. The vessels will carry freight only but later he expects to put on passenger vessels ruf- ning from Vancouver and Victoria. In the words of the despatch “Hon. Mr. Ballantyne looks to see Vancouver the biggest port on the Pacific coast.” There is not a word in the report or an intimation of any kind that Prince Rupert is to be included in the activities of the Government, Perhaps the despatch was sent out especially for Vancouver and Victoria readers and, therefore, this port was not mentioned. What this and other similar statements seem to in- dicate is, however, that Prince Rupert will have to fight her way. She will have to force Ottawa to recognize her. She will have to be constantly on the alert to correct wrong impressions and to find herself a place in the sun. Associated Board of Trade for District. Prince Rupert has a great deal in common with other parts of northern and central British Columbia. There is a community of interest which is worth cultivating. The same is true here. Let all the districts of this part of the country form small boards of trade and then let ail unite and form an associated board that wil! look after the publicity for the whole district. ‘There are such centres as Stewart, Alice Arm, Prince George, Vanderhoof, Hazelton, Smithers, Telkwa, Terrace, Port Essing- ton and one or two points at Queen Charlotte Islands that would benefit a good deai from the publication of a nicely illustrated booklet dealing with the country. Neither place alone could stand the expense, but let all unite and it should be an easy mat- ter to finance 20,000 copies. Possibly the mining camps and agricultural districts would benefit most, but Prince Rupert stands to gain from the growth and development of any other places in the district. A good organizer is what is needed to line up the different points and show the need of concerted action. In unity there is strength. Rupert Did Well In Victory Loan. Prince Rupert made a very creditable record in the Victory Loan subscription. The canvassers did excellent work and the people generally responded nobly. The plan of buying our own bonds and keeping the interest at home is an excellent one. There has been some crilicism of the cost of advertising the loan. The total amount spent in advertising is something like $300,000, or .06 per cent or three-fifths of a mill on every hun- dred dollars. That is very small. ist Prize $200 Cash. 2nd Prize $100 Cash. 3rd Prize $50 Cash. These prizes go to those who secure the largest number of new subscribers to the Daily News.
