Third Ave. & Fulton St. ZEPPELIN 0NRAILS New German Vehicle Flashes Along at Twice Speed of Fastest Train BERLIN. Aug. 5: Flashing along the railroad at a speed often exceeding 130 miles an hour, the new German aluminum "flying saloon" or "Zeppelin on rails" covered the distance between Hamburg and Berlin on Its maiden journey at twice the speed of the fattest express train. Curves were smoothly rounded and stations passed at lower speeds, but still the average speed was 109 miles an hour. The trial was deemed highly successful, and a new form of highspeed travel seems to have appeared on the horiaon. The "flying saloon" has been built by a German engineer, Herr Kruck-enberg, formerly associated with the Sehutte-Lanz Airship Company. It is driven by a 500-horsepower engine and propeller. The coach, which is about 85 feet long, has two pairs of wheels, with axles 63 feet apart, and can carry 40 passengers In two compartments. The driver sits In a raised cabin and the whole coach la very carefully streamlined. The trial was made in the early hours of the morning. The guests took their seats in the graceful, silver, rather fish-like "train." There was a whiV of the propeller, the brakes were released and the "flying saloon" sprang forward with tremendous acceleration. In a moment a speed of 98 miles an hour had been leached and 100 miles an hour In two minutes. A secret method of springuiR makes the com-rtft'tments practically free from vibration and swaying. Some passengers declared that when they shut their eyes at full speed, they hardly knew they were moving. I ' MIm Connlo Thorne sailed this mornlnc on hp Prince Henry for a holiday trip to Vancouver.
