Member of Audit Bureau of Circulations HELP THE UNEMPLOYED Tuetday, April 14, 1931 BRING BACK PROSPERITY "Spend and bring back prosperity" is the advice given by more than one important economist as a cure for the present economic situation. In spite of the fact that this advice runs counter to the time honored proverbs about saving for a rainy day, a study of past economic history proves it to be sound. Even in a period of depression a majority of the people have money to spend. But most of them lack courage to spend it. A time comes when needs become urgent, when confidence returns people start buying, orders filter back to the maunfacturer who is able to employ more men. Slowly at first, but with gradually increasing speed, the economic machine gets under full load and most of the evils of unemployment vanish. This is invariably the story of economic recovery. Without a doubt it can be hastened. Aggressive manufacturers, by the application of strong stimulants can, in their;own particular field, accelerate the buying movement with beneficial results all round. A Canadian manufacturer of linoleum and floor coverings is taking a definite lead in this respect by introducing a contest idea calculated to bring hundreds of prospective buyers into the merchant's store and thereby help him to sell more gopdS; Tjje contest is designed primarily to stimulate tfifr buy frig of floor coverings and apart from the self interest of the maunfacturer which is natural, it is undoubtedly a sincere push to move the sluggish economic machine a little faster, which other Canadian manufacturers would do well to simulate. This is the season when people are planning to do their gardening, to clean up their lots, to remove ash piles and to repair fences. Any small amount of work helps relieve the unemployment situation which is still very acute: Because of this the city is making an appeal to residents to get as much work as possible done, right now. Underthe present hard times atmosphere, there is a tendency to curtail on the usual work and this is a hardship to the men who are needing the wages for food. We suggest a loosening up so that those willing to work may be enabled to carry on. For those not willing to do any work, we have no sympathy. Terrible. Tickling Cough Could Not Sleep For It Mrs. Gordon J. Boy, S. W. Port Monton, N.S, write: "I bad t terriMa, tickling eugk, and t night eould not jet to iWp far kours for it. Republican and other leaders .who had been exiled since 1023 came back and a flood of agitation against monarchist Institutions was released. Strikes, student agitations and similar demonstrations flared up, and In December, 1930, there was an open attempt at revolution. The people finally spoke at the ejections yesterday and Alfonso was win enough to take them at their word. Continuation of his reign would, no doubt, have fomented further revolt. A monarch of great wealth, the marriage of , King. Alfonso to .Princess Victoria of England was always described as a love affair. They have four sons and two daughters. Although beset by assassins and revolutions without, Al fonso has always been credited with making a real family life within the residential sections of his palace. As much simplicity as the royal station permitted was always the rule and never a day passed without Alfonso spending some tune with his children. SPORT NEWS .
