DRY BASEMENT ADDS VALUABLE SPACE TO MODERN RESIDENCE How to Prevent the Invasion of " Moisture costs much less to build a watertight IT wall than to repair a leaky one. Consequently, the time to make a basement water-tight is when it is built. Monolithic concrete founda ttons easily can be made watertight if the amount of mixing water used in making the concrete is carefully regulated. The recommended .mix for water-tight concrete is one containing not over 6 4 gallon's of water per sack of cement. Concrete block and concrete building tile often are more conven ient than monolithic concrete for the construction of foundation walls above grade and for walls enclosing basements. Plain, unsurfaced block or tile are used for walls . below grade. The units are laid-up quickly tof great strength. A line of concrete drain tile Is placed entirely around the outside of the footing and is connneoted to a suitable outlet. The excavation above the tile is filled, with sell, cirders. or some other material of a porous nature te provide a fill that will altow water to seeV through quikly. When the foundation is ereeted so near another building that It is impossible to run a ime around the outside, the tile may be placed on inside of the footing. As a further precaution in securing a water-tight basement wall, two of more coats of portland ce-.nent plaster may be applied to the exterior surface as soon as wall forms are removed, or. in the case of a concrete block wall, just as soon as the mortar Joints have hardened. The plaster is mixed in the proportions of one part cement to I three parts sand. Before applying! the plaster, the surface should be dampened evenly. If -basement space is to be utilised completely, it is well to furr the exterior walls on the Inner surface and apply a coating of portland cement on metal lath. In most cases the plaster may be applied directly to block or tile walls. The result is that they have'more to take care of, more to' repairmore to renovate and the interest on the extra expenditure is lost. Also it may be mentioned that in case of the owner wishing to sell or rent, it is usually easier to get a customer or a tenant for a cottage than a large house. Today we are giving the plan of a four-room bungalow with sun-room and dinette as extras. There is no pantry but the cabinet kitchen takes its place and is piore convenient for the woman doing her own work. The house .is very well laid out and should appeal to those wishing something at less cost than plans hitherto offered. It is too wide for a single Prince Rupert lot but few people wish to build on a single lot today. With property prices so low there is no need for it. This bungalow is a western product built to meet western needs , and is well worthy of close study. 2 i.iV MSI 7 tj Get Your Linoleum at MacKenzie's Furniture A BUNGALOW OF HARMONY should constat of two base coats, each Vlnch thick, and a finish coal annrmnmatplv W-lnch ihllr uaiiur a i-3 mix thMH,h0..t o,v. !
