This is very greatly to be regretted because already the burden of taxation is heavy and just now people can ill afford any addition to that burden. However, the bills haj'e tq be paid and the people have to pay them. The budget . must be balanced, whether it be in the state, the business or the home or trouble will soon be brewing. - . j .' ; ORIENTAL PROBLEM Practically every legislature that has been elected in British Columbia has taken a shot at the Oriental problem but so far little if any change. has been made by legislative action. Many years ago slavers brought Negroes to the southern part of what is now the United States and since .that time there have been racial difficulties in that oart of the country. The effort to provide the cheapest kind of labor provided a thorn in the flesh that will persist throughout the ages. In Prince Rupert railway builders and bthers Imported cheap labor from the Orient in order to increase their profits. For years most of the manual work and also domestic work in many homes was done by Orientals but, chiefly through the influence of labor organizations, the importation of the cheap labor was stopped. Today many people claim to be suffering from Oriental competition. This is the direct result of the sin of our fathers who brought them here to flood the labor market and secure larger profits. They are now settled in the country and cannot be removed any more than can the Negroes be moved from the southern states. They are Canadian citizens in everything but the right to vote. If they had the right to vote the agitation against them would at once cease because all politicians would be looking for their support. - It may be remarked here that tjie very people who objected to Oriental competition in the labor market are the onoe that today take advantage of the opportunity to deal with them, now that they aVe in 'business. At one'fime the Oriental problem was a labov problem. Now it is a business problem. Eventually it will solve itself. OMINECA AND MANSON Jugt as Pooley was to be banished from the Legislature a few years ago by doing away with his seat, so Manson is to be eliminated by abolishing his seat. We prophesy that one effbrt will be just as successful as the other. The former Attorney General is too good a man to be left without a political home. He could have the nomination in a number of ridings in the province and doubtless after th6 next election will be found, either resuming his position as first lieutenant to the leader of the opposition or holding one of the most j6trant;rjffirt)lios Ina nevMdministration. This, combined with the fact that we are satisfied that the householders do appreciate the very material savings effected by purchasing their pantry supplies on the cash and carry principle, has prompted us to change our Fifth Avenue store to Economy Cash & Cany No. 2. Alterations to be effected will make the new Cash & Carry store convenient and handy, where you will receive the same courteous attention We have always endeavored to render our customers. The reductions in operating cost effected by the change will make it possible for us to offer our customers the best of food products at prices much lower than formerly. We appreciate the support given us in the past and solicit a continuation of your patronage under our progressive policy of lower pvices. The meat department will be conducted as usual urder tne management of W. M. Jones, who is well and favorably known to a large circle of satisfied customers. ' ' Orders amounting to $3.00 or more will be delivered free. For orders less than $3.00 the small charge of 10 cents will be made. MUSSALLEM GROCERY CO. LTD. Vancouver Stocks (Court? 8. D.
