THE DAILY NEWS Saturday j., WATERFRONT WHIFFS Halibutters Expect to Get Busy Soon Swan Gets New Engine Dry Dock Finishing Cruisers Pending; the holding: of a conference this weekend with officials of the United Pacific Fisheries, there were no new developments of much importance during the week in the halibut lishine: situation at Prince Rupert. While nothing: definite had been settled up to last night, the week has seen most of the boats outfitting for their first trips of theseason to the banks, the general expectation being that they will be off by early next week. Before making any more definite decisions on the matter in hand, boat own ers and fishermen decided to wait for more assurances from the Uni ted Pacific Fisheries in the matter of prices. Since the original announcement was made, it is understood that the price of 13c and 9c might not apply to both American and Canadian fish but that, owing to the American duty, the Canadian price might be somewhat lower. What would be done about it if this were actually the case seemed to be uncertain. Meantime, the fisher men have resolutely remained at home, contending that they would lose leas money by remaining in port than by going out to bring in fish for sale at old prices and under the new grading system. There is a feeling of confidence on the part of boat owners and fishermen alike that, by holding back how, they will be instrumental in bringing about a lasting Improvement In the matter of prices to be paid for their product. Developments of this week were being anticipated with inter est. After a rough trip up the coast. the well known United Church mis sion boat Thomas Crosby, with Rev. Captain Robert C. Scott in charge, arrived in port Tuesday night from Ocean Falls via waypointe. On board were Rev. Arthur Barner of Toronto superintendent of of the church in Canada, and Rev. W. H. Gibson, the cleric being here to attend the annual Presbytery meeting in this city this week. After conclusion of the Presbytery. Capt. Scott was to return to headquarters at Ocean Falls with the Thomas Crosby. Up till a few months ago. the Thomas Crosby was stationed on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Pacific Salvage Co.'s power tug Billmor, with Capt. Charlie Larkln and Capt. Norman Brodhurst in charge, left Wednesday night of this week for Brown's Mill on the Ecstall River, having in tow a boom of logs from the Billmor Spruce Mills. The Billmor returned to port Thursday night after making a safe delivery. On Trip to Skcena Having on board T. Herman of the Dominion Water Power Branch, Ottawa, who was to check up the water measure gauges at Khtada, Brown's Rlverand Falls River, the Pacific Salvage Co.'s power cruiser P. M. L. 2. Capt. W. E. Williscroft, left port yesterday morning for the Skeena River. The P. M. L. 2 Is expected back tonight if all goes well. Installation of a GO h.p. Kermath engine In the Power Corporation of Canada's service cruiser Swan was completed this week. The engine. which replaces a Ford Marine, was formerly used In a company runabout. It has greatly Increased the speed of the Swan. Under the name of J. O. Boulllatne, the Swan has now become a member of the Prince Rupert Rowing & Yacht Club fleet. Capt. Lome Peck Is skipper of the Swan which was built here a few years ago by George Kelsey of Seal Cove, having later been stationed at Stewart. II. N. Brocklesby, acting director of the Prince Rupert Fisheries Experimental Statjon, left at the end of last week for a trip to Vancouver to attend a meeting of the Pacific Coast sub-executive of the Biological Bodrd of Canada. Mr. Brocklesby expected to be away for about two weeks should be back In about another week's time. A good run of herring still eon- tlnues at Pearl Harbor. The Teeny Milly returned to port Thursday night. . Returns to Port After a year's exile at Jap Inlet, the hull of Capt Jud Thurbers old halibut boat Mulrneag was towed into port this wtek by Capt. Billy Hanson with the Thelma H. It Is understood that Capt. Thurber plans to have the Mulrneag reconditioned and engine Installed so the vessel may be put to use again. Universal engine, formerly in the Sunbeam, is to be Installed here. Freight Rates On Automobiles Being Taken Up At the meeting oi the Chamber of Commerce last night a letter was read from Hon. R. W.-Bruhn, minister of public works, in which he stated that the matter of cheaper freight rates on automo biles from Prince Rupert to Terrace and Prince Rupert to Hazel ton, was being taken up with the railway company and he asked the Board for suggestions as to what should be done.
