Everyone, we think, will admit the necessity of erecting a and will vote for the bylaw on Wednesday. We can- afford to have it go out to the world that we refuse pro cccommotiation for the education of the children. In addition to voting on the bylaw, the ratepayers will be The building will be erected her al Acropolis Hill or at Hays Cove Circle. It is for the voters shall go. school is built at Acropolis Hill there is a playground once that cost $35,000. At Hays Cove Circle there is no playground and if the school is built there, the children wiii have no suitable place to play for years to come. It will be quite mpossible to grade the school grounds at present, unless a new bylaw is passed providing for the raising of a suitable sum of for the work, A school will undoubtedly be erected at Hays Cove, but it should be a high school. The King Edward School already pro- vides for the people of that neighborhood. It is for the people however. What we would ask is that ratepayers get from the narrow individual advantage viewpoint and look at it from the point of view of the general advantage of the largest number of children. We believe it is wicked to deprive children of the opportuni- We believe that the person who is a party to doing that is worse than a criminal. It is not half as bad to steal as to refuse for some selfish reason the right of the children to moral development, which can only be secured through a proper physi- cal as well as mental training. , These things all have to be taken into consideration in de- ciding this inyportant matter. It is up to the people who have the iuterests of the children at heart to point out the advantages and disadvantages as they see them. Do We Suffer From Depreciated Currency? We often hear people speak in a pitiful way of a country with depreciated currency. There are disabilities doubtless at- lendant on discounted money, but there are also compensations. The country where money is below par can manufacture more cheaply than where it is at a premium.* Take Germany for in- stance. Her money is worth very little. The rate of exchange » very much against her. The result is that goods manufactured in that country can be sold at prices that will undercut any other country, Practically all the countries that were at war, with the ex- ceplion of the United States, Japan and China, have depreciated currency. Russfa is the extreme case, but. Her money has practi- rew school i is a city, vote on a choice of sites. sked-to o say where ‘it if the ; ; vatiabie at noney to dec ice away fies tor play. cally no value so that she is unable to do business with other countries except by way of barter. Germany comes next and there follow France and Great Britain and Canada. ‘There is wbout four per cent against this country as compared with the United States. If we purchase in the United States market we have to pay four per cent on exchange, besides duties. That really increases the duty four per cent. As a resultthe tendency is to purchase in Canad If we sell to the United States we get four per cent mare for the goods than we should from selling at home. The way to overcome the disparity is to produce more. By Coimg thal we can overeome the rate of exchange and shall again be able to do business on an equality with the United States. Much to Sell But Little Market. The United States has lots of goods to sell but the demand ts not great because of the exchange difliculties. European na- tions buy from Germany rather than in the States because they can get the goods so much cheaper. As a result goods are piling up in the American and very soon the prices must “imp, Unless the exchange rate is equalized. ‘There. is a year’s upply of wool on hand, but there is no demand for America: clothes outside of that country. factories Produce More and Spend Less, \i octicle in the Waii Street Journal comments on the de- preciated currency of Europe and the hopelessness of trying to bring it to a par With that of the United States where gold still can be exchanged for notes. It states that if we continue to in- crease the cost of production matters will only get worse. ‘The salvation of the situation is to produce more and spend less, a ——- Scene from “Heart of Humanity” and tomorrow at the Westholme theatre tonight LAND REGISTRY ACT (Sections 36 and 134.
