't: " ' ' DAILY EDITION ' "'l Friday, Feb. 27, 1931 FISHERMEN'S STRIKE Although Prince Rupert is a fishing community, many people liere do not understand the reason for the strike which is continuing at Seattle. The owners of the boats say that they have expended a lot of money putting in diesel engines, and other equip-, ment which cuts down the cost of operating the vessels but increases the overhead. Because of that they say they should have a larger share of the proceeds than formerly. The fishermen, while agreeing that the cost of operating has been cut down, declare .that the fish .are becoming less plentiful and that the life is a hard one and worth all they get while employed in the calling. They say that their earnings have been reducqd owing to greater difficulty in securing catches and the high cost of gear. The Seattle boats are generally larger than those operating out of Prince Rupert. Ifs very difficult to get excited about the.proceed-ings of the Legislature this year. With no money to spend the government is most uninteresting just now. MASSING OF TREATY The passirig of the halibut treaty by the United States Senate was rather unexpected as previous despatches had indicated that it was likely to be held over for a year. Now it -seems pretty sure to become law and operative before next winter. While doubtless there will be some difficulties encountered in connection with the working out of the general scheme for closing areas, it must be remembered that the commission is able to make such changes as may be necessary from time to time in order to work the least possible hardship on the fishing communities. The steady depletion of the halibut makes action of some kind necessary and it would be foolish to wait until the halibut were all gone and then try to bring them back. The more reasonable method is being taken. Commence at once with a system of protection of the banks and especially the chicken banks. Liquor seems to be very much in the public eye. But it's all right as long as it does not go to the public head and make the public wabbly. NESTLfi'S A PRODUCT OFCANAD flESTLES Uurull Ml TALL SIZC EVAPORATED MILK NESTLES "Wl"' ... This, combined with the fact that we are satisfied that the householders do appreciate the very material savings effected by purchasing their pantry supplies on the cash and carry principle, has prompted us to change our Fifth Avenue store to Economy Cash & Carry No. 2. Alterations to be effected will make the new Cash & Carry store convenient and handy, where you will receive the same courteous attention we have always endeavored to render our customers. The reductions in operating cost effected by the change will make it possible for us to offer our customers the best of food products at prices much lower than formerly. We appreciate the support given us in the past and solicit a continuation of your patronage under our progressive policy of lower prices. The meat department will be conducted as usual under the management of W. M. Jones, who is well and favorably known to a large circle of satisfied customers.
