T0TRADE WITH FIJI AUCKLAND, an., Jan. 17: The ; decision of the legislative council of FIJI to seek a reciprocal agreement with Canada to the exclusion of Australia and New Zealand is caus ing some concern In New Zealand. Efforts are now being made by the New Zealand government to come to an understanding with its tropical neighbor. Interest in FIJI in the trade position between Canada and Fiji was awakened In June last when the Canadian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, M. Croft, whose territory also Includes FIJI, paid a visit to Suva and addressed business men and planters there on the advantages to be gained by Fiji as a result of Increased trade with Canada. Last year's trade returns showed that; Fiji purchased from Australia goods valued at 543,963, while that country bought frpm FIJI only 52,- i 691. The position with New Zealand I was better, Fijian purchases totalling 140,418 while New Zealand , toolt goods to ihe value of 202,797. I But while Canada bought goods to the value of 546,489, Fijian purchases totalled only 84,822. Australia, whom Fiji treated best, treated her worst. ) "How long," asked members in the Fijian legislature, "was Canada going to be content to buy from us and receive comparatively nothing in return.'. In supporting the motion Sir Maynard Hedstrom considered that greater preference should be given Canada for her salmon as most of : the Fijian supplies came from there. 1 Canada, he thought, would not be so keen to tax raw products, but might give them preference on copra, otner memoers spoKe in suDDort of the motion and even- tually It was decided to appoint a committee to go Into the matter of L9otd on Wbu Moow Moqntain on 8outh Wff,t ,d of W1 TWtu ArM conpludine concluding a a customs customs larui tariff 01 of re-! re , TtjJ NOTJOT th(kt nkUtk!, Eg, Clprocal tariff with some part ofrton of Twttoa taa mu ot otto the Empire, preferably Canada. ; , MerchanU In Auckland, the city that fleures most nromlnently ln.u the HJlan trade, are inellned to view the latest development with some concern.
