daily" Edition Friday, Koffcttber 27, 1931 EPOCHAL BROADCAST The national broadcast on Wednesday evening when the premiere of all the provinces spoke briefly in advocat-; ing support for the National Service Loan was an epochal event. Each premier spoke from his own province and each was heard equally well. All spoke well and several took advantage of the occasion to advertise their own. jirovinces throughout the rest of the Dominion.- It was an ! indication that Canada is not very backward in regard to '. radio service except that it lacks a few of the more power-ful stations that would reach places like Prince Rupert which are handicapped through being too far from the broadcasting stations to get good results all the time, i What is needed is a series of big national-stations that ' would be powerful enough to insure daylight reception all the time. WILL THERE BE AN ELECTION? About amonth ago i rumor went around to the effect' that a provincial election was imminent and it wa to take place before the new year. Inquiry at Victoria dleited the information that a number of members of the legislature ' we're trying to force an immediate election but that the! members of the government were not at that time favor-' able to an appeal to the country, presumably not until the : P. G. E. problem was satisfactorily settled. , Since that there have been many rumblings emanating from the capital indicating that a seirmic disturbance was! possible at any time. The rather futile efforts of the ad- ministration to cut down expenditures in the face of fall- j ing revenue and the semi-official announcement that; something like five million dollars more would have to bej collected from the people in taxes in 1932 over and above; the amount collected in 1931 and has had an effect with the 1 result that yerterday the leader of the opposition sent out a public warning that an election might be called at any ; tirrie. ! Should there be an election before the next session of the Legislature it would have to come early in the new year because the Legislature should sit in time to vote money for the carrying on of the business of the country before the end of March. It was not expected here that an election would take place before next summer and it is still possible that the Legislature as at present constituted may carry through the annual spring session. Another possibility is that they may hold a brief session, vote enough money to carry on and then make their appeal to the people for another iease of life.
