The St. Lawrence waterway development, on which negotiations are being reopened between Canada and the United States will, it is estimated, cost $500,000,000. The proposal is that the two countries shall contribute equally to the cost. The project would give a direct connection with the Atlantic Coast for Lake Superior and other ports of the Great Lakes, eliminating the necessity of transshipment of cargoes. As a matter of fact, Canada has already contributed $125,000,000 to the project in the building of Welland Canal which will be one of the important links in the proposed new shipping route. . Objecting to the development by United States of Canadian water powers, which would be involved, Premier L. A. Taschercau of Quebec dubs the project as "premature." There is plenty of power in Quebec Province already, declares Premier Taschereau. INDIANS DROWNED Natives of Tort Simpson Named Ryan and Cooper Lose Lives ... In Warke Canal The provincial police cruiser P. M. L. 8 was dispatched this morning to Warke Canal to search for the bodies and investigate the circumstances of the drowning yesterday at Warke Canal of two Indian fishermen of Port Simpson named Ryan and Cooper. Up to this morning no particulars apart from a brief report yesterday from Port Simpson that the two natives had been drowned on Warke Canal and that their bodies had not been, discovered. The names of the Indians drowned were George Ryan and George Cooper, the police learned this afternoon. Elijah Pollard escaped with his life. The tragedy occurred when the three men were coming down a small liver at the head of Warke Canal in a canoe from their smokehouses. YOUNG MAN IS KILLED Peter Anderson, 25-Yeir-Old Norwegian, Loses Life When Rifle Accidentally Is Discharged Presumably the victim of the ac cidental discharging of his 30-30 rifle, the body of Peter Anderson, 25-year-old Norwegian, was recovered yesterday afternoon from the Ecstall River near a shack In which he was living while engaged In wood cutting. It Is believed that Anderson died either Sunday or Monday last. James Madsen, fisherman, reported to the police that he had sighted a half-submerged boat on Monday about eight miles up the Ecstall River. Going over to Investigate, he found the boat was anchored close to the bank near tho shack in which deceased had been staying. There was no trace, how ever, of Anderson. Constable William Harrison, who Is stationed at Port Esslngton, was dispatched to the scene and, as a result of dragging operations, the body was found and brought into the city yesterday. It Is presumed by the police that deceased was endeavoring to Jump ashore from the boat with the rifle In his hands and that the weapon accidentally went off.
