The news that the enemy warships that were surrendered would with a few exceptions be destroyed seems like a terrible waste of valuable property, but it must be remembered that it is much cheaper to destroy the ships than to man and operate them. As long as they are afloat they are a danger. Possibly the stee] may be used for some useful purpose. The joker in the news despatch of Saturday is that while the Allies propose to make the Germans pay for sinking the ships, the proposal is made to destroy them all in order to get rid of them. Liquor Prescription Abuse to be Remedied. Attorney General Farris says that the amount of liquor to be sold under prescription is to be reduced to eight ounces. ‘That will work a great hardship on a few old topers who go dry on the least possible provocation. It will, however, remove the com- plaint that is often heard that while some can get liquor others connot. It will prove rather expensive to get a prescription in order to secure eight ounces of temporary joy. By next autumn, aceording to the statement of Mr. Farris, the people will have a chance to say whether they require that more than eight ounces of liquor should be dispensed by the Government at one time. Let the people decide. Law Making Machinery Is very Expensive. The law making machinery of the province is very expensive. A news despatch on Saturday told of the cost of Dominion legis- lation and to this must be added the cost of every provincial legislature, nine in all, and then there are some few hundreds of thousands for municipal government. Take away all this overhead cost and the taxes would be lighter, and possibly we might get on better without so much dabbling in experimental legislation. Mine Bonding Still Goes on. The bonding of the Sunrise mine by the Guggenheims is significant of the general development work that is going on in mining throughout the district. Not only are there rich mines at Stewart, Alice Arm, Anyox and Surf Inlet, but at Hazelton and other points up the railway, there are rich properties, and the Sunrise is one of them. This mine is close to the Silver Standard and other properties that are being developed.
