Tne vessels Queen City, Tillle and Sunrise, registered in the State of Washington, were seized off the Queen Charlotte Islands on June 18. 1930, while the vessel May, registered In Alaska, was seized a few days earlier. The boats were taken into custody under provisions of customs and fisheries protection act which prohibits fishing vessels of foreign registry to enter within three miles of the Canadian shore unless driven In by stormy weather or the necessity of making repairs. Captains of the seized boats claim they were In distress on acpount of bad weather. Against this the captain of the pa trol launch stated In the cases of Queen City, Tillle and Sunrise the weather was calm and that In the case of the May the vessel could as easily have anchored outside the limit. The admiralty Judge In Vic toria decided against the fishing vessels. The annual run of oolachans Is now on at the mouth of the Naaa River and, as usual, many Indians from the Naas River villages are around Fishery Bay taking the harvest of these peculiar fish by which so much store has been put up by the Indians ever since the very early days of- their history. While the most of the oolachans that are taken are put up by the Indians for their own food, there are the usual few boaUoads coming into town and the popular "candle fish" have been finding ready local sale. The oolachan run only lasts a few weeks and there Is always great activity among the Indians while It is on. Faced with the likelihood of a large carry-over from last year's pack, owing to- a demoralized market the fishing Industry in British Columbia will enter upon 1931 operations with a more or less tene brous outlook.
