HEAVY VALUES THERE IN HIGH GRADE ORES On Thursday last two very in- teresting addresses were delivered before the convention of the Brit- ish Columbia Mining Institute in Vancouver. These were made by Major Angus W. Davis, superin- tendent of the Dolly Varden mine at Alice Arm and E. E. Campbell, mine superintendent at Anyox. Dealing with mining fields that have attracted world-wide atten- tion during the past season and are of local interest being so close to Prince Rupert they will be of particular value to local people. Dolly Varden. Major Davis delivered a informative address on the Dolly Varsien Mine, the phenomenon of the Aliee Arm district, the his- tory of which has been so troubled and stormy, but which was finally placed on a firm basis as a steady shipper by the Taylor Mining Co. last August when they completed the last mile and a half of the Dolly Varden Mines Railroad Since that time the mine had shipped 6,500 tons of high- grade ore some of it nunning into the thousands of dollars per ton Operations would take place as far as possible into the winter but it was not expected that shipping could be carried on right through In the spring a new and more ex- tensive scale of opcrations would be adopted. The ore was of a richly high grade character and it was believed, of a secondary origin. Only this highest grade ore was being shipped this sea- son, the poorer, being left unti! milling operations could be com- menced. Stewart District. Voted one of the most interest- ing of the convention, was the paper read by E. E. Campbell, of Anyox. It was entitled “Mineral Developments in the Stewart Dis- trict,’ and grasped the situation in that distriet very intelligently. very ‘SUBSCRIBE FOR THE DAILY NEWS The Salmon River distriet was re- ceiving the most attention and publicity now because the most recent high grade discoveries had been made in that vicinity. lhe general structure of the mineral region was dealt with at length Mr: Campbell, who made freque it reference to well known mineral groups which have given evidence of being very rieh in bigh grade values. Usually the northern prospector has to deal with low grade ores, but the making of rich finds in the Stewart district ha stimulated prospecting to a great extent, Lf a substantial tonnage can be guaranteed the district of. fers no hindrances to successful mine development and operation as there are ne great obstacles to reilroad construction and road building. The ore of the district is econplex and would offer great scope to assayers and engineers in discovering preeesses for its smelting. en eee i In the Letter Box WHY NOT ORATORIO? To the Editor,— Will you permit meto point out what [| consider to be a slight lack of good taste in the last two con- certs at the Westholbme Theatre. Admitting that the time has gone by, perhaps happily so, when musie can be rigidly divided into sacred and secular, and further admitting that those in charge of these’ concerts do not aim at put- ting on a religious service; is there any real value in absolutely ignoring traditions enjoyed by many and a class of musie ap- preciated by all? With all the wealth of Oratorio that is possessed by the musical world and with all the sacred music that cannot be classed in any Way as secular, why not be all things to all classes and at acknowledge the support|™ and presence of those by whom such musie is greatly appreciated?
