Comment on Game The game was very evenly con tested but the defences were gen- " erally able to repel attacks of the .forwards. Legion had two spares neither of whom was of any assistance. The Regiment were handicapped by Carroll's old injury crippling him early in the game and by Lyons' weakness. Smith had little to do in the Legion goal but was safe. Jack and Baptle were a fine pair of backs. Woodslde was the pick of the halves though, at times his tactics are questionable; Howe played hard. W Murray tackled well though he did not feed his forwards. Warren and Bussanlch were the best forwards. Murray showed some ball control but Is very Ineffective. The two new men were of no value. Laidler had hard luck In losing the goal after stopping Warren's fierce drive. Thurber was very safe, both with head iand feet. Watson's miss led up to the goal, otherwise he was good. Kelsey turned In a fine game at centre half, tackling surely and evidently trying to open ( out the game and feed his forwards. 1 Edgecumbe was reliable and fast and shows promise of having a good season. Fong was the best forward with Wlnsham next. Carroll was lame soon after thestart but does not look like ft centre forward. Lyons was very weak. Wilson crossed some dangerous balls. Editor, Dally News: I think your article In Tuesday's paper urging all citizens to keep their premises In good repair dur ing this period of depression was well timed. Very often just a little thought, labor and a small outlay frbm each property owner will prevent that "down at the heels" ap pearance which spoils a city. I would suggest that you send a marked copy of this edition to each of our city fathers, for they should set an example in this direction, and are sometimes a bit remiss. For instance, early last fall our good council saw fit to barricade the sidewalk on Seventh Street from Second to Third Avenues. Now this is the most direct route from the Post Office to Third Avenue, i and certainly should not be closed for nine months. In the first place it was not In very bad condition. It Is level, has a solid foundation and ten dollars j would have put it In good repair. The street is used constantly. Regiment forwards were clever at the start but Baptle cleared and then Dennewas weak when the Legion attacked. Edgecumbe cleared when Warren was dangerous and Wilson crossed a couple but Carroll failed. Howe forced the game and Warren had an opening but shot weakly. Kelsey was very effective. Fong and Wlngham combined nicely but the former shot past. Wilson had an opening but lost the ball. Watson missed and Warren was through but Laidler saved his hard drive. To prevent a corner the goalie followed out and, In a scrim- mage, Bussanlch got the ball and his weak shot rolled along and Into the goal for the opening score. Car- , roll was limping badly and Wilson ' went into centre. Thurber cleared and Regiment were attacking when half time came. Legion attacked at the start with "Woodslde, Warren and Howe com bining but Watson kicked clear. Baptle and Jack were hard put to stop Fong and Wingham but the1 ball was cleared. W. Murray stopped 1 Wlngham and drove In a long shot that Laidler easily cleared. Warren finished very weakly when close In on Laidler, turning the ball tamely Into the keeper's hands. Watson came through to help the Regiment forwards but Wlngham crossed the ball too far back and an opening -was lost. Carroll had an open goal but was too lame to take advantage of it and Smith cleared. A claim for a penalty by the Regiment was disallowed. In reporting the last football! same, you say that the newly form-id Spartan Athletic Club should take advantage of the 100-yard handicap race fostered by the Football Association, or words to that effect. We feel that In this ar ticle there was a very obvious in-; ihuatlon that the Spartan Club was not showing many signs of life. We also feel that the Football Associa- ion may think they are staging the handicap for our benefit only. The Spartan Club knew nothing about the race officially. The race was open, and If individual members of our club were unable to get up to the grounds that in no way should reflect upon the club. If the football association wants us to enter runners to a handicap meet, we should very much appreciate some notification of how the handicaps are to be decided, and any other necessary details. The Spartan Athletic Club Is very much alive, and the members are most anxious to take part In races at all times, but if Individual members fall to turn up to a race that Is open and In no way restricted to club members, then the club's name should not be mentioned in a reprimand for Individuals. Thanking you for the very valu able publicity you have given the elub, and trusting that this explanation may meet with the under standing of the football association. I am, Yours faithfully, J. W. PLOMMER, President Spartan Athletic Club. Andy Donald's Millionaires, considered at first to be very weak, look much better now that he has acquired a few new men and If he can Jteep his players in town will be a hard team to beat. Both the manager and the players of this team are to be commended for the manner In which they turn out on time fdr the games, with always a player or two to spare. There a nothing more annoying to the fans than to arrive at the game on Ume and have to wait half an hour for two or three players to show up.
