Passing from this room we enter the pantry where cupboards are built Instead of occupying spaee In the kitchen. We then proceed into the bright and. attractive dining room, lighted by a large bay window. A small closet Inconspicuously built In one comet of the room may be used for china. Across the hall from the kitchen Is the breakfast room which, when furnished with a handsome break fast suite, would make an Inviting place In which to have the early morning meal. We are convinced: that the house wife should be satisfied so we will pass on to father's wants. Ills inter est lies chiefly In the den and living room, where he may spend his evenings In rest. As both these rooms appear to be cozlly laid out we will make our way to the second floor. The two bedrooms shown on the right side of the floor plan would be ideal for brother and sister. Of ample size and containing clothes closets, they could be furnished admirably to suit their occupants. Other" bedrooms on the floor are spacious, light and of good proportions so that we fear no criticism. The attic contains servant's quarters and storage space. THE DAILY NEW3 Build a Distinctive House .;, ' . ... si s '.j.U ij. i When building a house for oneself it is always . worth while to make it distinctive. It should not be like eyery other house in the neighborhood. It does not cost much more to be different and thus add to the artistic effect of the homes in the district. As we have suggested before, very seldom does a ready prepared plan just suit any individual. They are published in the hope that some of their features may be suited to the individual need. Some will not like the exterior, others will not like the interior; the kitchen may be too large or top small; the windows not sufficiently large, or there may not be the required den. To any person thinking of building, we suggest that he make a practice of studying plans and comparing them with houses visited. By doing so he finds out his own needs. This is not only the season for building but is also the season for renovating. Painting plans may be laid now. A yery little paint makes a very great deal of difference to the appearance of the house. By doing a little every year the cost of renovating does not come so heavy. Sometimes it is the kitchen that needs papering or calcomining; it may be the bedrooms that must be cleaned up, and the living room is always the better for some touches. ' . tti 1 &&&&& A PRACTICAL EFFICIENT PLAN CHARLES DUMAIS, Architect practical house of honest AVERY design Is pictured here. There are no unnecessary details to mar the substantial, 'fclean cut appear ance. One glance at the perspective will suffice to show that the building Is absolutely free of waste space. The design of the house Is such that it would be equally suitable for country, suburb or city. It is necessary that a house should satisfy all the members of the family it shelters In order to have harmony in the home. Let us suppose ourselves to be In the position of the housewife. Instinctively she turns her attention to the kitchen so we will do the same. We find no Outline Specifications She of House: 28' 7" x 39' 5i.H Suitable Lot: 50 frontage. Walls: Brick. Koof: Shingles. SUGGESTIONS HERE MAY ADD TO IDEAS Numerous Colors and Textures Make Careful Selection Essential appearance of a brick house THE depends a great deal upon how the bricks were selected for color, placed in the wall and fitted together with mortar. For the interior of the wall you j will use common brick, which Is the cheapest brick you can buy. For the exterior you may use common brick specially selected for shape, color and hardness, or you may use face brick which affords a greater choice of colors and texture. The color pf the brick which you can purchase runs from light buffs and greys through browns, reds and dark blues and purples. The textures which are made on the bricks are also quite varied, largely due to the methods of manufacture. Be conservative In the kind of jointing you ask the mason to make. Rough, wide joints are not necessarily beautiful, in fact in most examples they are ugly. The smoother your brick, the smaller should be your Joint. There Is no need of coloring the mortar. Grey and white mortar joints look well and always will look well. Red bricks which are just a little varied in shape and color put up in an orderly fashion, as the J mason wants to lay them naturally. with white mortar In the joints, marked smooth with a round tool, produce a beautiful wall. Do not be carried away by the craze for rough picturesque, wild and crazy brickwork. We will get over this period soon, and return to the simple direct type of brick wall. If you employ selected common brick. It is best to remain very conservative and, not be led astray by the rough textured walls which are to be seen In increasing numbers. There Is a no more delightful brick house than one constructed with ordinary common brick walls, laid up In the ordinary manner with joints almost flush and then painted afl over with a heavy coat of whitewash. There are no tricks In it and the house takes on an atmosphere In a few months of weathering that is enviable from an artistic standpoint. A paint of grey cement, slightly colored by yellow ochre, applied over a common brick wall, makes a surface unusually suited to the English cottage tyje of house. Copyright 1931.
