beauty of its architecture or the

Does the author of the pro-
posal wish to throw the grandeur

lief, or is it the debris that clus-
ters about the short cut to the
Anglican Church that he would
bring into greater publicity.
One Satisfaction.
To us property owners at a
distance who have to shoulder
such a considerable part of the
city’s burdens, it is satisfactory
to learn that there is money in
the treasury for any sort of im-
provement. Certainly there is no
lack of inviting directions in
which to spend it. But let us. be-
gin with the basic things and the
most basic of all is sanitation.
You cannot build a successful
city on defective sewers. A house
built upon the sands has a pleas-
ant and dignified fate in com-
parison. I am not afraid to say,
and I hope you will not be offend-
ed to hear, that if it were not for
Prince Rupert's incomparably
healthy climate and cleansing
rain, the odors of the town would
groan for burial like Mark An.
thony’s carrion men. Last sum-
mer I remember one particular
shop frontage behind which busi-
ness must have been carried on at
a disadvantage, as nobody could
possibly linger there, however at-
tractive the display.
Next to Godliness.

Cleanliness is next to godliness
and ‘a long way ahead of illumin-
ation. The proposal to buy clus-
- lamps for Third Avenue and
© on with the present system of
patching up the sewers reminds
one of the bohunk that adorns his
shirt front with an expensive
sparkler for the party but neglects
