FISHERIES QUESTION!. Many Matters Are Discussed By Chamber of Commerce I At the dinner meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night there were several discussions in regard to matters broueht before the chamber from the annual meeting of the North B. C. Salmon Fishermen's Association. Olf Hanson M.P. and O. W. Nlckerson were the chief champions of the fishermen's requests a number of which were endorsed. The matter of fishing licenses to Japanese being granted direct Instead of through the canneries as at present was referred back to the Incoming fisheries committee for further report on motion of G. W. Nlckerson. The old committee had reported against action being taken. The chamber went on record against salmon trap licences after a somewhat heated discussion during which Olof Hanson expressed himself as opposed to the issuance of licenses as efforts were being ! i made to build up white fishermen's settlements. He said he would like ! an expression of opinion for or against It. j I G. W. Nlckerson somewhat heatedly j urged the board to take a definite 1 stand and a motion favoring ; It whs flnnllv nrtnntd nn mntlnn rf Olof Hanson M.P.,. seconded by ' oun-' rrmce Mayor Orme. In regard to the question of the ' For Alaska-handing over of control of the flahH Jan- 108S- Prln' erles from the federal to provincial ! authorities it was decided that the chamber was not In a position to make a decision from the Information before It. . Reduction of the age for receiving old age pensions from 70 to 65 was endorsed on motion of M. P. McCaf-fery. ; The open door for new canneries was endorsed on motion of G. W. Nlckerson and Olof Hanson. The proposal to endorse the re-: duetlon of tax on dry salterles from $1500 as at present carried on motion of Olof Hanson and O. W. Nlc kerson; th'e : present high tax oper-' ating to eliminate the small man.' Col. Nlcholls suggested that the char.iber was Inconsistent as the, salterles were chiefly in the hands of Japanese but M. P. McCaffery Insisted that this was not the case and Mr. Hanson said efforts were being made to get the fisheries back Into the hands of white British subjects. On motion of Paul Armour It was sent hack to the committee for further report SCALE OF CHARGES f The following is the scsle of charges- made for readlnir notices: , Marriage and Engagement announcements $2. name. .
