They give their grand concert on the evening of that day with sev- eral noted soloists taking part, Mrs. Herbert 8. Wood of Vancou. ver is the chief of these. Speak- ing of ber the Vancouver Sun says i— “Mrs. Wood has a charming soprano voice, whieh has never shown to better advantage than in the beautiful solo “From Mighty Kings He Took the Spoil" and “Wise Men Flattering May Deceive You" and in her duet “O Never Bow We Down” with Mrs. Day. Her voice is sweet, sustain- ed and flexible, revealing at all times that great depth of feeling so essential in oratorio work.” Dr. Large of Port Simpson will sing also. His fine bass is well wonth the price of admission to hear. Mrs. Large will play the piano and the choir will give the well known cantata St. Cecilia's Day. — } In the Letter Box SALMON FISHERIES lo the Editor:— In your paper lately has been several items in regard to the salmon fishing industry of ‘this district. As a salmon fisherman | would like to advanee by humble ideas oh the same subject. As I have been making my liv- ing for several years at the sai- mon fishing, and would like Sill to do so, and also see others cen- tinue in this business, if the sal- mon are not extenminated. I con- sider it about time we were mak- ing a change in the laws and thus protect so great and important an industry. In the first place, as everyone knows, the cannery interests con- trol the salmon industry, through their holding concessions to all the important fishing streams. Of course the government could at any time take their rights away from them, and fer that reason the cannerymen do nothing to de- velop om preserve their fish, in the way of destreying the natural enemies of the salmon, cleaning out the rivers and seeing that there are enough salmon allowed to go up the different streams to perpetuate the species. In other words “The cannery men are get- ting theirs’ while the getting is zood.” Open to All. There is a movement on now to throw the fishing rights open to everyone. That looks very demo- eratic on the face of it, but we what has happened on the American side where they have free competition, the Sound is almost fished out and so are parts of Alaska. The American boats were even coming down here and see fishing off shore last summer and raiding some of the outside streams. Thus you see what would likely happen te our fishing if we had the same system for a time. I like competition and would tike this system if I thought the fish would not become exterminated. Now why could not the govern- ment monopolize the salmon in- dustry and develop it as I know it could be developed into a big paying proposition for all the people. The country has big debts to pay and why could not a big industry that is liable te be ex- terminated if left to private enter- prise be used to help pay them. Yours for the interests of al! the people, Ek. G. WRIGHT. VANCOUVER STILL IS TALKING OF YUKON Worry Over Statement of Gossip Writer in Liverpooi Post. via G TP. Telestaphs.
