After' attending school to hij native town of Brigus, the veteran skipper completed his schooling at the high school in Harbor Grace. Soon after leaving his studies he shipped with his father on the SB. Panther, and. from this date onward his life has been filled with many Intensely Interesting and exciting adventures. In 1896 Captain .William took command of the Iceland and until the year 1929 the famous sealing skipper captained the finest vessels of the Newfoundland fleet. For sixty-two years without a break he' prosecuted the -seal fishery, and during these years he landed more than 500,000 seals. Tho history of seal fishing In Newfoundland Is merely a history of the BarUetts. Away back, over one hundred years ago, when only open boats were eng?ed in th; prosecution of the industry. Captain "Billy" Bartlett, grandfather of the deceased, left Brigus in an open boat of about forty tons, arid steered for Baccliou. Finding ng ice there he said to his crew "Ful low on." and they did as commanded Ulr they reacted the Spotted Islands on Labrador. There they found plenty of seals, loaded there ship, and returned to Brigus to receive one of the great est welcomes ever extended to any person in that historic town. The BarUHU have been "following on" ever since. Captain Bob adhered to the. motto until he piloted Peary U the North Pole, while th? dis tinguished member of this family who has Just been called by death kept the motto in mind as "followed on" to brin: fame ana fortune td his honored name and one of the most hazardous calling in modern life: ; (Left Honored Name) This doyen of the sealing mast ers has left at his, death an hon ored name, as one of the most successful seal killers and planters and as the strongest, most earnest and patriotic personality in New foundland. Public life held UtUc attraction to this grand old man. J and In his hours of leisure at home wain nis iamuy ne lounc mom attraction than publicity oan ever meal. His very presence com manded respect, he was not haughty and overbearing, but on the contrary a man of easy approach. Oreatest of all, this veteran ice captain, who' had the singular honor of never having lost a man In his sixty-two years of sealing experience, died without a single enemy. 10c. a week!
