The unserupulous use of drag seines is destroying a great many creeks very rapidly . ‘ The “price of cannery and all fishing should be} ; licenses greatly reduced f) The close season should be , | extended, beginning with an in-| crease of 12 hours the coming! Reason | 1 & Returned soldiers should} i be given preference in all cases. | h) Legislation should be intro- | duced enacting drastic penalties where licensees are fishing out streams, and these licenses should | be taken away. | i The patrol system should ltiplied, and an elaborate | program for the preservation of. spawning grounds introduced. | | should have men. | that No. 2 hel Of course tioned first should be others, separated from the witn a resident inspector who lives here all the time. Let us examine some of the! reasons that are advanced against} throwing the fisheries open. Open Fisheries. | ‘One, is that it is impossible to | We have cited to us the case of! the Fraser River where the fishery | is nearly extinct, but no honest} man will blame that on to gill! net fishing. It was the traps eal Puget Sound and the avarice of | American cannerymen there that | destroyed the Fraser River fish- eries, “We are also cited the Alaska! fisheries which show signs of de- pletion. That is being caused by the greedy shortsightedness of Alaskan eannerymen in out streams fishing the same as I hap- pen to know seme of our cannery- men are dome. Another reason given by the cannerymen is that the fisheries would find its way into the hands of Orientals and that returned soldiers would be eliminated This is a shallow eamouflage. It is, however, edifying to find the cannerymen developing a violent affection for white men, afte favoring the Orientals for some forty years. If Japanese are excluded from purse fishing and gradually from gill net fishing, and returned soldiers given preference in all cases, where can it be explained that retarmed soldiers are to he eliminated. The fact is that the cannerymen are trying to get be- rind the returned soldier and get lum to boleter up their monopoly. Faith in Business. ‘I was in the cannery business inyself, for several years, and | would be very willing to go into if again and invest every penny { could scrape up, and to enter into competition with all the world. | don't think I could make any stranger argument than thal, as it shows I have every faith in the business and would be willing to risk any available means | have in open competition. “L would like to point out that under the present system thie fisheries of this district are par- celled out in Vancouver by and to southern interests. We are not even privileged to know what and where licenses are granted unless we pick it up from the outside I sugwest that we northern people don’t want to interfere in the affairs of Nos. t and 3 districts. What we do want to do is to run our own district and be permitted to engage in these vast fisheries that lie all around us. Only Nickerson. a) What I want to know is wheth- er public opinion is behind me in ind drag seine net eliminated my endeavor to establish open fishing’? I think we should treat this question quite aside from party and from politics and show that we are all .united on the question. When I tell the in- inspectors down below that there is a profound public opimion on this question they say “Oh, no, its only George Nickerson. While I think that Mr. Nickerson is en- titled to every eredit for the fight he has put up for open fisheries, still I believe the vast majority of the public hereabouts are ol the same mind, I have been driv- ing this into the head of the Minister and department ollicials at Ottawa, and from telegrams I lhave received I am convinced they | ai e disposed to do the right thing. But all the great and powerful interests of southern eannery jowners are moving heaven and learth Lo defeat my ppoposals. The liremendous ramifleations of this |monopoly are almost unbelievable. iit is now up tothe residents of lthis countey to shew how they, THE DAILY NEWS EY Nr i _ —— ——-—- ———-— yy Oa OO ON a iiiiieienes housewife to OY OOOO ON stand, or peace, Permanent Industry. TAKE MEDICINE IN CAPSULE FORM Gives Quicker Action—The Ideal Method for Home Treatment. Why medicines in capsule form are best was recently explained Dy a medical au- thority as follows: “The object of taking medicines ts to get quick results and also make the taking as easy as possible. The capsule form does this The palate does not revolt at the gelatine coating, no mat- ter how repellent to the taste are the drugs contained. The capsule also goes down the throat without inconvenience “In the stomach tne gelatine coating dissolves almost immediately and _ the medicines start work promptly. The capsule is far superior to the hard pill, which, especially if it has been exposed to the air, often passes through the system without being dissolved.” A striking illustration of the effective ness of capsule form medicine is given by Grip Fix, the remedy that relieves a cold in a night. This preparation contains Quinine, Salol, Caffein Citrate, Cascara and Camphor Fonobromate, the drugs usually used by physicians for colds or Grippe In capsule form they provide a reliable home treatment for colds which gives wonderfully quick results, just what is needed. Have a box of Grip Fix in the house at this season when colds are all around. Get Reid's Grip Fix as there ts no substitute so effective or quick.
