Each team strength and into was playing cautiously and depend- fsslbIe energy the oward the end of effort' Kan?e- ing entirely upon individual and long range shooting. As usual, of course, they realized that, without a little team play, it would be a very tame and uninspiring affair. Panthers had tough luck in their shooting and, although they occasionally sank one. It was soon noticed that the efforts of Menzies, Ratchford and Ourvich were giving 32 a lead that might be hard to overcome. There were flashes of combination with Mitchell engineering one or two pretty endeavors for the Panthers. Both teams failed to converge their play towards the basket. Long shooting, or even shooting of any kind, Is useless unless provision is made for snaring the rebounds. And the Panthers kept losing possession of the ball by failing to make this safeguard. The half time score saw the Taximen comfortably ensconsed in a 12-7 lead. Resuming play, the Panthers ' turned to combination, open play - and short well-timed passing. Mac-. donald, however, fumbled many passes and spoiled several fine united efforts that looked very dangerous. The Panthers were gradually overtaking their opponents, chiefly due to the steadying influence of Mitchell who. after starting several exciting plays, threw in a nice overhead loop and brought the score to 16-15 for the Taximen. The pace Increased, with Panthers getting the best of the play due to some fine work under the basket on the part of Cross. Irvine was also shooting often and played hard but , managed to tally only two field baskets. The Panther combination now equalled any that the C. N. R. team, which has led the way in organized play, has ever exhibited. Mitchell was the outstanding player and scored under the basket to put Panthers on the carefree end of a 19-10 score. S. Ourvich substituted for FrteeH who hadn't been flttbw In so well, but it ws of no avail After several really brilliant com bination efforts. Irvine scored and Crocs dropped 1n two more in quick succession to finish the struggle at 25-10 for the1 Panthers. For the Taximen Mentsss, D. Ourvich and Ratchford were the test, but In the second half they htekfd good coord inaticn of play. Pan thets Cross (81. Irvine (6) Kelscy 3, Mitchell (fli. Ladies' Oame The girls' game was quite a hectic battle and brought forth some exciting and strenuous play. The first half aaw the two teams evenly matched, battling evenly all the way with Lowe showing well for the Cardinals, and with Roberts and Harvey strong for the Comets. In the second half, though. Comets lost Steen who was badly shaken up In a scrimmage. Connery subbed for her. With the4r Opponents thus weakened, the Cardinals hastened to take their advantage. Lowe went five field baskets. Irvine and Kri kevsky garnered two more, while the Comets got only one after some fine playing by Roberts. Harvey worked hard and effectively but fand shooting. A finer exhibition of real basketball could hardly be wished for. The game was of lightning speed from start, to finish. The teams were evenly matched and at no stage in the game was either team in the lead by more than three points. Referee Bill Mitchell kept the game clean by permitting no unnecessary roughness. The players were so- encouraged game cneering oecame so grea that the referee was obliged to demand quietness so that the whistle might be heard. The Merchants easily played! ' l I 1 L f il r.1 . , iiicii ucsi game ui me season, ineir defence and forward line played perfectly together. Their passes were short and most of their shots were from under the basket. As a result, they took an early lead In the game. The tremendous speed and energy displayed by the Merchants from the start entitled them to win. Their only danger lay in maintaining this pace throughout the game. However, at the end of the first half they held the lead by one point. The second half was still more pectacular thati the first. The players were wound up and prepared for action. Vance was a rigid guard for the High School and this permitted the High School forwards to direct almost all their attention to shooting and they took the lead. For a period of ten minutes right up till the final whistle It was anybody's game. The crowd was almost mad and they expressed their emotions by shrieking and howling wildly. With less than two minutes to play High School was In the lead by one point, then Pierce scored for the Merchants and Comadlna rcored a penalty which gave the Merchants a victory by two points.
