Editor and Reporters' Telephone L. 8G - Advertising and Circulation Telephone 98 Member ol Audit Bureau of Circulations , v Wednesday, June 17, 1931 TREK TO THE PEACE Apparently it is the opinion of people on the other side of the mountains that something will be doing in the Peace River country before long, for they continue to move in that direction. Possibly the succession of good crops reported from that district has something to do with it. but also it is likely thnt they believe the western outlet will be built before long. Arrivals from that part of the country recently report that at present there is a spread of thirty cents a bushel for freight and storage between Peace River points and Winnipeg, which makes the growing of wheat profitably under present conditions quite impossible. For instance, when wheat is quoted at 60c in Winnipeg it is 30c in the Peace country. As a good many have to haul their grain one hundred miles to the railway it can be easily seen that profit is absolutely wiped out. This year much of the grain was sold at 50c or less at Winnipeg, which means 20c or less in the Peace. Give these farmers a western outlet to Prince Rupert and they will cut down the expense of trettincr to market very materially and the farmers will have a much better' SENATOR ROBERTSON'S MISSION Senator Robertson, minister of labor in the Bennett Government is out west on a mission of inquiry into labor conditions. He has been invited to come to Prince Rupert but replies that he cannot do so. Possibly we in Prince Rupert attach too great importance to ourselves and our city but we are the centre of a huge and important district and the Senator cannot get a proper idea of conditions in Northern and Central British Columbia without coming here and meeting the people." It is to be hoped that the Bennett Government has some better scheme for handling unemplovment than that of last year. To curtail expenditures and thus cut down labor employment to the extent of, say, fifty million dollars and then vote twenty millions for relief, is hardly the right way to meet such an emergency as the present. What is needed today is a bold, constructive policy which will give relief without pauperizing the relieved. 'Let the government undertake some big works of general benefit to Canada and employ the men there. If cutting is to be done, the time to do it is when there is plenty of employment offered by private enterprise. The western outlet of the Peace River country -is one such nterprise which would not only employ men on the construction but would open up a country for settlement which would provide happy homes for many thousands of people permanently.
