The ice usually goes out the latter part of April and the navigation season opens some time after the first of May. The freeze-up may occur in October or November. The fact that the Consolidated Mining it Smelting Co. closed down development work a few days ago on the Emerald mine In the Slbola j district in the central interior, is not taken as any indication that I the management has any lack of j confidence In the value of this pro- 1 perty. indeed, there Is assurance that development work will be even more active with the first opening up of navigation this coming spring. As is well known, the property is very isolated and winter operations are carried on only with much Albert Neuman, who for two years was located at Smithers as foreman there for the Consolidated ' Mining & Smelting Co., is now stationed at Kimberley in the service of the big mining company. Capt. John Wtllman -of Usk is at present in Toronto consulting with the directors of the Columario Ooid Mining Co. in regard to operations on the property during the coming season. Three men are at the mine at present and it is expected a much larger force will be put on In a short time than has ever worked on the mine before. From present indications, it looks as if Usk will be one of the chief mining centres in this part of the country during the coming summer. H. Thompson Is Dead In East James II. Thompson received the sad news b&wi'rc over the week-end of the death at Nine-Mile In Hants County. Nova Scotia, on Saturday of his youngest brother, Leon Thompson. The late Mr. Thompson had lived on the family homestead, 30 miles from Halifax, all his life except lor a couple of years spent in DrltLsh Columbia about twenty-five years ago.
