MANDY ! IN DEMAND Stewart Wants Him If Mining District Is Split Up One of the nice things arising among mining men this last month was the graceful tribute paid to Dr. Mandy, resident government engineer, for District No. 1. The prospec tors of Stewart are requesting that their huge district be divided, as it is too much for one engineer to cover In the ordinary course of his duties. If and when divided, however, the Stewart people wish to retain Dr. Mandy in their portion. This simple request speaks louder than columns of eulogies would, In showing how the people of Stewart appreciate Dr. Mandy and the work ho has accomplished among them. Mining and Industrial Record. CHILDBIRTH DEATHS HIGH Efforts Being Made In England to Improve. Situation MANCHESTER, Jan. 13: The circular letter which Is being sent out by the ministry of health to the local authorities on the subject of maternal mortality marks the lat-28t and most promising attempt to reduce the disturbing number of deaths In childbirth, says the Manchester Guardian. There are 2,000 births dally In this country, and eight of the mothers die every day in childbed, or 3,000 .every year. No wonder Bernard Shaw should have made one of his characters say that it requires more heroism to be a mother than to engage in battle, or the minister of health should Imply today that the miners' occupation, dangerous as it is, Is infinitely less risky by comparison. The departmental committee on maternal mortality came to the conclusion that 48 of the detths In childbirth are preventable, but a food deal of expert opinion inclines to the view that the percentage of oreventable death is considerably higher than that. As the ministry it health are pointing out, there is enormously more data to proceed upon today, and the present action of the ministry is prompted largely by the knowledge acquired from the analysis of 2,000 fatal cases. The new knowledge has convinced the ministry that the deaths can be halved if only the local authorities, using their existing powers, will de velop services for ante-natal supervision for mothers. It is the lack of this supervision for many women which Is the main contrlbutary ?ause of the present high deathrate. Changes In Old Country Customs Are Observed VANCOUVER, Jan. 13:-A Vancouver lady, recently returned from a long stay In England writes In the local press some of her observations. The "head of the house" no longer exists in the Old Country. Many of us remember that all play ceased as soon as father came In. "Run and get father's slippers." "Has anyone seen father's glasses?" "Now run off to bed and let father have peace." Fortunately, the mother did not realize that her lot was hard. Lord Dewar had the right idea of marriage when he wittily described It as a committee of J,wo with power to add to their number. The family committee idea is growing. The women's institutes have done a wonderful work, thanks first to Mrs. Watt. OJ3.E. of British Columbia. I suppose the three greatest blessings of the age to the rural dwellers have been the wireless, the bus services connecting them up with the smaller towns and the women's Institutes. Townswomen's guilds are, perhaps, the most recent successful Innovation, and are organized all over England In towns with a population of 4000 and over. Their program embraces the home craits 01 mc insiiiuic wont ana me j citizenship (local and parllamen- j tary) of the women citizens of the larger communities. These have proved very successful and have now started in Scotland. Three cents a share Is payable In January 3, 1931. which Is half the rate maintained since jJuly. 1928, while before that time the rate was eight cents quarterly.
