Editor and Reporters' Telephone 86 Advertising and Circulation Telephone 98 Member ol Audit Bureau of Circulations DAILY EDITION " ' wfitjtfpfr Thursday, July 10, 1931 HOMES AND GARDENS At the risk of tiring readers, we must refer once more to the improvement made throughout the city in the matter of homes and gardens. In most unexpected places may be seen excellent attempts at original gardening and especially on the rocky lots that at one time were discarded as useless for building purposes. These lots offer a great opportunity for picturesque effects and are considered by many as far superior in opportunity to the flat lots that many people choose. In Victorin there are rocks almost everywhere and years ago they were looked upon as something standing in the way of the city's progress. Then came a few people who showed how wonderful gardens could be made among them and how they could be made to add to the beauty of the place. The result was that rock lots were in great demand and would often fetch higher prices than level lots. Prince Runeit is built on hills and valleys. Jt is very picturesque and if the residents follow out their present plan of beautifying the .gardens, the city will steadily improve in appearance. While it is a great advantage to have a number of spacious gardens and beautiful homes, it is.the pretty little cottages, the tiny ornamental gardens and the small green lawns that make the real beauty of the place. To the work-ingmcn who take a pride in their gardens as well as in their work lies the credit for making the citv what it is. In a few years Prince Itupert should earn the title of "Prince Rupert the Beautiful' W w . GET MEN EMPLOYED The way to deal with the present dtuation is to get the men employed. The way to get them employed is for the federal government to take the lead and initiate public works of a suitable nature. The government is already taking steps to deal with the farming situation on the prairies. As a former resident of Calgary, Premier Bennett is familiar with conditions in the drought area and can sympathize with the people in their need. He is not as familiar with conditions in this province and cannot so easily enter into our problems. We must therefore draw it to his attention the more forcibly and imi: t that something be done. What is the use of being n part of the confederacy if the federal government does not help in time of need. UNEMPLOYED PRESS FOR GOVERNMENT ACTION TO RELIEVE THE SITUATION' (Continued from page one) -urged - i the necessity for the government opening up more construction camps on the new highway. At the present rate. of progress each man will have to wall five or six months between shifts for his share of work on the road. Just as the meeting was adjourned it was noticed that Alderman Macdonald and Alderman Rudder-ham were outside. They were Immediately invited In. Both aldermen addressed the meeting and explained that the mayor and city council were fully In sympathy with the ob jects of the meeting and the neces sities of the situation, and that . they were doing everything possible to persuade the governments at Ottawa and Victoria to institute steps to relieve the situation. The city Itself had done more than Its fair share In the past and in fact was at present In considerable financial difficulties owing to the continued drain on their resources. It was now however, agreed that the matter was of such a national character that it was beyond the power of municipalities to cope with and was for the government to deal with. Notice to Transient Unemployed The committee of the unemployed In sesslcn after last night's meeting decided that It was in the interests of all concerned to publish a runner to the report of the mass meeting to the effect that there Ls no use In unemployed men coming to Prince Rupert in the hope of obtaining either employment or relief.
