Man’s inhumanity To Woman Exemplified. We hear a lot about man's inhumanity to man and woman's inhumanity to woman, but seldom of man’s inhumanity to woman. Since the war, however, it has been brought home here in Prince Rupert when we have seen women struggling to bring up a family on less than fifty dollars a month allowed by the Government. In this case the husband had been killed in the war. An even more glaring case is that more recently brought to notice where a woman, who was recently bereaved, is left with a young family and no support and has to bear the indignity of a charity collection to help her fight her way. These cases are a shame to the country, yet they are com- mon enough and we in our selfishness do not care. We allow the condition to continue. There is absolutely no provision for the wives of half the community should the breadwinner die or be killed. One of the big political parties has placed pensions to widows on the program of proposed reforms, but it is a pity that it is necessary to wait until a change of government comes about in order that justice may be done. Such conditions as that men- tioned are those which breed bolshevism in the country. Another Industry in This City. Another industry has been added to the city. Seal Cove, possibly the best industrial site on the harbor, is the latest site to be occupied by a boat building and repairing concern. In about a month this will be ready for operation. Several small industries are being started here, and all will add to the permanency and growth of the city. It is the little industries that should be fostered, for they eventually become big. Fuel Question is Live One Here. . Reports of oi! shortage consequent on the rapidly increasing number of fuel oil boats and the exhaustion of the oii fields tell us that it is time we were developing our coal fields in this part of the world. Coal is coming back. That seems certain. ‘The Groundhog and Telkwa coal fields are available and enough coal | vembe might be produced there to supply the demand in this part of the world for a century to come. What we need is courage, and pertinacity in order to induce the Government to tap the fields with railways. Retall Association And Members’ Profits. A bulletin sent out by the Retail Merchants Association of Canada says: “On behalf of the members of our association we desire to again pledge ourselves to do all in our power to help the members of the Board of Commerce to arrive at some plan whereby they can ascertain if unreasonable profits are being made, but we beg to remind them that competition &t all times among al! classes of retail trade is sufficiently keen to keep retail prices at the lowest possible ebb. We submit that the financial record of the retail trade in Canada does not warrant the assump- tion that undue profits are being made in any line of the retail trade. As evidence, a survey of the retail trade of Canada from coast to coast reveals very few members of the trade in the millionaire class. “We believe, however, that the efforts which are and which have been put forth by the members of the Board of Commerce up to the present time are.not such as to produce the desired results and we are further of opinion that instead of ascertaining the real cause of the increased cost of living, the agitation has unsettled the public mind and disturbed the commercial and manufacturing, as well as the producing and distributing in- dustries.”’ AM REMEMBER PoP THE DAY AFTER ~ A FEW Moke WAR onveRs THE DALLY NE $1,600 A MINUTE The insurance companies of America Jay out to their policyholders and Jeneficiaries during tft year an average of about $1,600 per minute ‘or every working hour during the year.
