HAVE BIG ENGINES Monster Locomotives Are Placed On Kamloops- Jasper Run VANCOUVER, Jan. 2 Announce ment k made here by B. T. Chapel, general sujrintendent, Canadian National Railways, that two new passenger engines have just been placed In service between Kamloops and Jasper. They are of the 6000 class and are the largest passenger engines of the Mountain' type operating in British Columbia. rhev will operate over two divisions, ' a distance of 2 75 miles, in handling J the Continental Limited, crossing the summits of both the Albreda and Rocky Mountain ranges. These engines' are 92 feet in length over all and weigh 627,000 pounds, in working order. They operate on a steam pressure of 250 rounds to the square Inch. They lave four pair of drivers with 73- inch drivers. This type of engine' is now used for company passenger trains from Kim loops to Montreal. From Win nipeg to Edmonton, a distance of 300 miles, it Is alto used on a itraiglit run, the crews changing at divisional points. This is believed to be the longest locomotive run in Canada. Sale of Work at Metlakalla Was Lively Affair METLAKATLA. Jan. 2: The Solvation Army held a sale of work Tuesday night In their hall. Every available seat was taken. Alter the usual opening ceremonies, three comrades gave a novelty singing contest. The object was: who could stay out the longest singing "Home Sweet Home," without moving the jaws, but with mouth wide open. Sergeant-Major Prevost won. As an encore number, they tried whistling. The audience at this stage was In frantic hilarity. Envoy Clifton made a splendid auctioneer. The sale was a pronounced success and the sum of $69 was realized, thanks to the splendid hrmpport given to a good cause. The Klbhax of the evening was reached when the sale of candles for the kiddies started. Every bag carried a number which corresponded to the number on the prizes. Secretary' Lelghton was appointed to find the prizes. Most of the prizes contained a noise maker and above the din J and roar, could be nurd the explosion of a toy pistol. Oalety reigned supreme. Reluctantly, the party had to close before Uie lights turned off at midnight. WEATHER IN 1930 Decidedly Bad December Cave City More Rain and Less Sunshine For Last Year A decidedly unfavorable December, which had 15.48 inches of rain and not a single hour of sunshine, gave Prince Rupert a poorer record in 1030 than in 1029, official meteorological figures reveal. Sunihine in Prince Rupert during 1030 totalled 1,104.74 hours as compared with 1,- 253.3 hoiirs In the year preceding. RalnfaU for 1830 totalled 85.33 inches as against 82.45 Inches in 1929. From the standpoint of temperature. 1930 was a milder year than 1929. The lowest thermometer reading for 1930 was 12 above zero in January while in 1929 the fewest reading was 8 above, also In Jan uary. The highest reading for 1930 was 80 in August while In 1929 the high temperature was 84 also in August.
