The plans as published on Saturday show that the new institution is to be recreational and educational. There is nothing religious or denominational about the plan and it in- cluded everything that can-be of benefit to the place, There is now just one thing needed. That is energy and determination in the carrying out of the scheme. No matter how good the plans are, they become valueless if the members do not work hard and in harmony to bring about the desired end. In Prince Rupert there is-too little community spirit. There is little effort to work for the common good. Too many of the people are bent on amusing themselves instead of trying to im- prove the whole community. While Anyox and Prince Rupert are dissimilar in many respects, there are also many things in common, and an crganization such as that mentioned might be carried out here with advantage. Literary or Debating Clubs are” Absent. : There is no general literary or debating society in Prince Rupert. The young men and young women have little opportunity to cultivate their talents along the line of public speaking. At Anyox they intend to remedy that condition. Why not in Prince Rupert? The men here dre just as intelligent as elsewhere. They have just as much ability. Why then are there no oppor- tunities to improve. This is something that is worth thinking about. Attempted Murder Injures Cause, The attempted murder of Viscount French will not aid the cause of Ireland. It is an injury to any cause for its advocates to take the law into their own hands as was done at Dublin. While thousands of people in Great Britain have sympathized with Ire. land for many years and have done what they could by their votes and influence to bring about a change, they will not tolerate such acts as that reported Saturday. Exchange Presents Or Really Give. ’ Which are we doing this Christmas, exchanging presents or really giving? To give to those who will give in return is simply to exchange. To give to those from whom there can be no return is the real gift. Some day we hope there will be no one who is without the things which make for holiday enjoy- meat. As long as there is poverty, however, it is necessary to help the poor. Distress and sickness abound everywhere, but here less than in most places. We should be thankful for that even if it does take away the opportunity to be charitable.
