GRAY Teacher of Piano Studio 187 Second Avenue PHONE 182 or 444 we ANNIE BEING REBUILT HERE Was One of Pioneer Boats of Vancouver Island Before Coming Here. With only the stub of a gaily decorated bowsprit to identify her to those who knew her in the past, the notable old sloop ‘Annie’ lies in Cow Bay, being practically rebuilt by her owner, Capt. Kohrt, who is well known here. Karly in September Capt. Kohrt come north from Victoria with the old boat which had been lying up the West Coast of Voneouver island for years, having been seized for debt. The Prince Rupert man went south and took the vessel to Victoria where he bought her. Coming up the coast Capt. Kohrt had trouble with the engine and was forced to put into Nanaimo. He then returned to Vancouver where he made the repairs and started out again, Constant engine trouble worried him all the way north, the trip being made in two weeks. The Annie is of unknown years. She sailed up the West Coast of the Island when Victoria was young, and her rapid voyages with sealing supplies to the stores of her owner, Charles Spring, made her well known in the port, It was out of Victoria and on the West Coast that she seems to have operated. Power was in- stalled a few years ago and short- ly afterward the sloop was seized. She lay neglected until purchased by Capt. Kohrt who is now re- building her as a motorboat. He claims that the old hull is sound but the remainder of the craft he replacing. She copper- sheathed. The sides of the Annie formerly had an unusually large tumble home, but by the removal of four planks on either side Capt. Kohrt has eliminated this. She once carried a large spread of canvas and was gaily decorated. With the power installation came the clipping of her wings. The new owner of the Annie is leaving only the old name and the bowsprit stump as memos of past glories. He intends to use his boat for small salvage jobs that large companies cannot af- ford to handle. He will also fish or do other work as opportunity offers. SILVER STANDARD TO BE DEVELOPED AT GREATER DEPTH After visiting tne Silver Stan- dard mine it was stated by Gen- eval J. W. Stewart, who is one of some needed is is the chief owners and who re- turned from active service in France only a few months ago, that development at greater depth wil] be undertaken without delay. He says that there is no doubt that he and his associates have a mine, and, if expectations are confirmed by the work proposed, it will become one of the largest producers of the province. The Silver Standard Mine has been opened up and proven to a depth of 250 feet on what was previously known as the main vein, and to a depth of 125 feet on No. 4 vein. The ore as a rule is high grade, but of a somewhat complex nature, requiring a little different treatment from the usual run of silver-lead ores, The prop- er treatment, however, after con- siderable research, has been es- tablished. General Stewart states that it has been realized that develop- ment at greater depth is neces- sary, and plans have been con- sidered to carry on further work. CUTTER BEAR MA BE PURCHASED FOR SALMON CARRYING The announcement that the Grand Trunk Pacific is now look- ing for a vessel to aid the Tilla- mook in the northern salmon trade has brought on speculation as to what boat will be procured. It is understood that a number have been already looked at, and the latest information picked up points to the purchase of the American revenue cutter Bear. This steamer has made a name for herself as patrol ship of the far northern waters, and has suc cessfully withstood many seasons of battle with the ice and terrific stomms of the Bering Sea. It has been the Bear that has steamed to the rescue of the survivors from the various wrecks which THE Mrs, Forbes aa Bullerecipe isis Mrs, makes much the same way Dodson does, except that %.lb. butter to a small tin of Pacific Milk, -and adds a butter Forbes in Mrs she that uses pinch of baking soda, Try a combination of the two. BOLSHEVIKS ADOPT HORRIBLE TORTURES In Mad Orgy of Death and De- struction Tortures of Middle Ages Reverted to. 99 GENEVA, Dec. 22.—Refugees flocking here from Russia state that the atrocities being perpe- trated by the Bolsheviki in Russia reach almost the depth of mad ravage and horrible vengeance. The tortures of the middle ages are common methods of death and destruction. Human life is no consideration and the Reds take a barbarous delight in in- flicting horrible tortures. Th bourgois in many cases ar burnt alive in oil at the stake and even crucified. ° Spirella Corsetiere. Phone nition Land Act Amendments mane new confined to sur- veyed lands only.
