Che production of coal in
Alaska in 1918 was 75,000 tons,

tory of coal mining in Alaska,
being 40 per cent. larger than the
output of 1917, which was
greater than that of any previous
year. It is believed that a sub.
stantial coal mining industry has
aut last started in Alaska.

The largest part of the output
in 1918 came from the Matanuska
field, which yielded 63,092
The remainder came from eight
or, ten small mines in different
parts of the territory. All these
except those in the Matan-
uska and Bering river fields and
at Port Graham, produced coal for
local use under free-use permits
About twelve mines were oper-
ated, employing 239 men for an
erage period of 254 days.
