An expedition Is now being organized, headed by Anscel Eclt-rnann of Seattle, well known In Prince Rupert, who last summer followed the Stlklne River In British Columbia many miles to Its forks and came almost within night of the famous valley. The so-called Valley of Oold ha been the object of constant search ince the days of the Russian occupancy of Alaska. It has been the rainbow dream of all prospectors and several lives have been laid down in search, for it. Fame of the valley first sorcad when Indians brought great nuj gets into the trading post at Sitka, then occupied by Russians. The Indians sp'ent freely In those days and boasted of having unlimited supply of gold in the land where they came from. No sooner had the Russians purchased the gold from the Indians by exchange of trinkets than the natives would return to their valley and then come back again with more gold. Tales of Wealth Tples of fabulous wcdlth reached the ears of the Czar, who ordered that a concentrated search bf made for the valley. The In dians were trailed by scouts, but their racks were soon lost. How-rver. $ie report was current that the Indians had travelled up the Stiklne Rlvr In canoes. A detachment of Russian sol diers were detailed to search the 1. fad-waters of the Stlklne but thy n; ver returned. It Is believed that ton soldiers er attacked by th Indians irraftibuih and mas-sarrpd and that the Indians, fear-f'.il of the white man's revenge, decided never to return to the Sitk3 post. It was not until 1898 that rc-y.ns c! the mysterious treasure vniW were again brought to life when Indians began to bring pouch y t:ll of fold to the trading 'H:t t Wrangrll. A white man unee. the secret of the gold's 'ourre and made one trip to the nip re. r turning with a rhh stoie n' tii" metal. He organized an expedition to make a more extensive e ireh of the valley, but his party ti: i op? i red and was never reported. T -si summer while in Alaska F knnnn received a rough sketch of the Valley of Oold from an aged lutnn In his plans he followed ! i stiRine many miles Inland. Ht in nod south and followed the ivn between towering cliffs until he reached a snug lake where It wouI8 be virtually Impossible ts land unless entry was made over the Ice in winter. Eckmann believes that he has found the lake where lies the wonderful valley. Several adventurous flyers are planning to Join his expedition for an extensive search for the gold this summer. Falling that, a party may be landed on tho lake during the winter and continue their search In the following .spring.
