It seems that with the consent of our govern- iMrs. w. j. Oreer. the president, was ments the seals are Protected on the Pribiloff Islands and i charge. these seals pass dowri the coast in the fall and return north in the spring, taking large toll of the fish as they pass. There are many thousands of these animals and it is al-, most impossible to estimate the number of halibut and salmon they destroy. It is not only what they eat but what i they kill that really counts. Every year the government spends considerable money killing the sea lions. This Is good work but it is not enough. The fur seals are just a8 bad in the localities where they pass. They not only kill the fish but interfere with the fi.shermeft in their arduous labors by actually taking the flh off the hooks, salmon in the inside waters of Hecate Strait and halibut oh the banks west of Queen Charlotte Islands. The fishermen have to look on these depredations, helpless to do anything to stop them because the seals are protected by international agreement to which the government of Canada is a party. At various times we have advocated the abrogation of the treaty ami the throwing open to everyone of the right to catch the seals in open waters Then Prince Rupert fishermen could turn from halibut fishing at a time like this and take seals instead, thus making an honest living when such is denied them from the fisheries. In view of the prevailing situation it is very desirable that the government of Canada take action to protect the fishermen on this coast by destroying the fur seals or allowing them to be destroyed whan they prey upon the fish from which our fishermen make their living.
