PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. DEAF MAY ! 'HEAR' NOW New Device Enables Mutes to Feel Music and Oratory EVANSTON, 111., Aprir 28: If you were struck deaf, mute and blind tomorrow, you could learn to feel the world's most beautiful symphonies or the most inspiring ora tions within six months. This possible replacement of man's sensory organs has been brought about by the development of a strange little machine called the teletactor upon which Dr. Ro bert II. Gault. professor of psychol ogy at Northwestern University, has been experimenting for eight years. It is only during the past year, Dr. Oault declares, that definite results have been obtained. i Dr. Oault measures his results in a somewhat unusual manner. Although many of his instruments ure in use at the Illinois School for the Deaf at Jacksonville. 111., from which he has been receiving encouraging reports, no "genuine" opportunity to test the apparatus appeared until he discovered Miss Helen May Martin, 58, who has been a blind, deaf mute since she was four. Itrmarkablc Feat Miss Martin, who oddly enough -has been using her big toe as an ear. taught herself to play a few pieces on the piano by pressing that big toe against the middle pedal of the instrument.. Her music was halting, crude, expressionless and a trifle wierd. Nevertheless, she eventually pieced together "A Perfect Day." The teletactor consists of a small vibrating disk, upon which the deaf person places his finger. It is connected with a microphone through a battery and amplifier. With this outfit sounds of spoken language can be felt. Inasmuch as no two sounds feel alike, a deaf person's understanding develops as he differentiates between the intensity of the vibrations. By patient application. Dr. Oault is slowly teaching Miss Martin the differences In sound. The woman has learned only 30 basic words, but her progress In music has been better. "By playing 'A Perfect Day' on the phonograph for her.'' he said, "we finally taught her that It was the piece she had been playing on i the piano. Then, slowly, she noted the differences between her rendi-jtion of the song and that of the : orchestra. In the past few weeks (she has been putting color into her I music." L. T.
