During this month of December the Government proposed

mercially successful. The one great drawback just now of course
is transportation. The distance is too great and the country too;
difficult to consider bringing the animals out on the

hoof, and |

there are no railways.

Opening New Country by

The utilisation of aeroplanes and dirigibles is the newest
means of transportation, and although yet in its infancy, maiis
are being carried by the air route successfully on this continent
and in Europe, while passengers are being regularly taken from
London to Paris. From passenger traffic to freight is the next
step. Aeroplanes carried many tons of bombs across the enemy
lines in France, and the lifting capacity of the K-33 which flew
across the Atlantic and back is much greater than an aeroplane.
The amount of capital outlay required for the building of a raii-
way would construct many air vessels—on an average one for
Time, being the essence of our modern
life, would be saved. The Chief Commissiofier of the Mounted
Police is to be in the aeroplane for the long
patrols and it is estimated that the trip from say Prince Ruper*,
io Herschel! Island, the most northerly post and the worst of the
patrols, a distance of about 1,300 miles, could be done in fiftee:
hours. The advantages are obvious to the most sceptical.

Bank Cierks Want
To Form a Union.

In Montreal, Toronto and other of the larger cities in eastern
Canada there is just now a definite movement towards unionising
the bank clerks. Hitherto has
considered “not professional.” But bank clerks, like many others,
are finding that they cannot live in 1919 on 4 1914 salary, with
still less prospects of being able to do so in 1920. Besides, bank
clerks was to get married when they want to, and not when
the boss says so. But to certain of the financial executives the
word “union” brings with it the posssbility of a strike. And
what would happen if the bank clerks went out because they
wanted domesticity and a raise in wages? The most important
thing lo the average man would be that no one could get a pay
cheque cashed, although the serious thing would be that the
business of the whole country would be tied up, and that if not
settied quickly, there would be no pay cheques at all. In “the
right to strike” bank clerks would hold a more formidable weapon

every mile of railway.
