Ring Out the Old,
Ring in the New.

We are today closing up the year and tomorrow we take up
our duties where we left off in 1919. There is no break. It is
customary, however, to look back over the year and take stock,
and to look forward and brace ourselves for the work that is
before ts.

As a nation we have been passing through difficult times.
The aftermath of the war has proved unsettling. The, nation ts
finding the financial stress difficuit and the people are finding the
steady rise in prices press heavily on them, especially the wage
earners. However, with a few exceptions, there is employment
for everyone and wages are high. Strikes are not as frequent
as they were, for men are beginning to realize that the limit is
pretty well reached in the matter of advance.

There is a scarcity of food and clothes and as long as that
searcity exists there will be plenty of employment for everyone.
Production is what is needed at present. Food is needed and
clothes are needed. While there is a scarcity the cost of living
will be high and wages high. What wili follow we cannot teii.

Prince Rupert seems to have had a prosperous year. ‘The
merchants, speaking generally, have done well, although com
plaints have been made in some lines. Competition is very keen
in certain trades and the result is something disastrous, ‘There
have been setbacks during the year. The strike, the ice shortage,
occasional car shortages, delays at the shipbuilding plant, all
tended to hold us back. The future looks rosy, however.

There are many who prophesy a very rapid growth for
Prince Rupert. We are among the optimists, but we do not look
for any boom. We see growth in the future, a steady normal
increase in population caused by the growth of our industries
and the improvement of our transportation facilities.

We need houses, but if we are to have them the rents must
cover the interest on the cost, else people will not build. On the
other hand if rents are too high, people cannot afford to pay and
will not live here.

Harmony and
Not Unison.

It is useless to ask different sorts and conditions of people
to act in unison. They cannot do it. They may, however act in
harmony. Each one Will do his part, a different part from the
others, and yet it may fit into the complete whole.

In this community we have people who are ef almost a hun-
dred different religions, of several different political faiths, men
and women of many nationalities, educated and uneducated,
cultured and uncultured, tall and short, dark and fair, industrious
and lazy. No two people are alike. And yet all these may co-
ordinate. and form a harmonious whole, working iogether for
the common good. Much depends upon our desires and on the
spirit of toleration that is displayed.
