The event was held under the auspices of the Native Sons of Canada. The following debaters repre senting the KlUumgallum Uterarv and Athletic Society upheld th affirmative side Stewart McLeod. Lloyd Johnston, and Lewis McKen-ney while Tom Marsh, Floyd Frank and Vernon Glass, repre senting the Native Sons, uphe.d I the negative. I The outstanding arguments of I the affirmative side were: 1. Efficient organisation and administration enable the chain-stores to sell for less. 2. Owing to a more rapid turnover of stock the chain store has much more buying power than the private dealer. 3 The chain-store sells for cash only, thereby making it unneces sary for good credit customers io support poor credit customers. 4. The chain-stores are clean ani sanitary. The clerks are capable courteou. and efficient 5. The chain store makes regula -donations to charities tn the community C. Chain stores have been in bu.l-nrss fo many years, thereby snow-'ng thtlr value to the community. Negative Claims The members of the Negative side bated their claims on the fol lowing points: 1. Chain stores merely rent sutcr to carry on business; they invert no money in buildings or homes in the community. 2. The chain stores sell for cub Many peqple cannot pay cash at certain times but must depend on store-keepers who give credit. 3. Chain-stores employ clerks at the lowest possible wages thereby creating want, unnappiness and many social problems. 4. Chain-stores tend to lower factory wages by forcing wholesaler to reduce prices. 5. Chain-stores do not subscribe to community needs to the same ex- tent as do individual tradesmen. 6. Profits earned by chain-stores are sent to some distant head quarters. The community there fore loses the benefit of this money. Decision Is Given The Judges. Mrs. HalL Mrs.RUev. Mr. Mitchell and Mrs. Burnett, brought In a decision In favor of me negative. The speakers on the affirmative showed definite signs of protrrl3" as debaters, but were somewhat hampered by lack of experience No doubt their style will show improvement in the future. The negative stae were easy victors, due to their more mature Judgement and exDerienee. Mr Tom Marsh was the best speaker of the evening. During the evening a very en toyabln program was oresented hv the High School poolta. This was followed by dancing, musk beinj? supplied by the "Town Orchestra and by Mr. McLaren.
