ERIC GEE IS HEARD Intcrcstinr Address Given Prince 1 Rupert Teachers' As-joclation The Trlnce Rupert Teachers' Ar Relation heard a most illuminating and Interesting address last evening at their monthly meeting when Eric Gee, manual training Instructor In. the schools of the city, spoke on "History as Revealed In Furniture Styles." It is a truism that the (treat so cial movements have been fully reflected In the furniture of the period. The changes from the furnishings of the great baronlul mansions to the equipment of the modern homes of the rich and from the labourer's rough unfin ished shack to the well furnished home of the present day worker are indicative of the changes oi the social conditions with which these changes in furniture have keot sten. The decrease In the Dower and nrlvlleges of the aris tocracy with the corresponding In crease In the liberties of the peo nle can be readily traced by the "tudent of the period styles of fur nlture. The Elizabethan style Is regared ed as the commencement of fuml ture styles in England. The style were extravagant but with an un dcrlylng seriousness of expression 'ntcrnretlnc the changing mind of the. people. Liberty was bein demanded by the people, and th comfortable chair was being mad" bv the craftsmen, meeting th wishes of the poDulace. This styl wan lareelv Influenced by the Dutch and Italian craftsmen lm ported by Henry the Eighth but with the accession of James the First the Jacobean style began to devolve. Not very beautiful nel (her wag the character of the king It later gained much in dignity from the Influence of Charles the First. Cromwell and the rigid mor- ulitv of the Puritans forced a simplicity of design that was soon reversed entirely when the Restor ation gave the people unlimited xpression and embellishments and irnate gliding resulted. The William the Third and Mary period was an Anglo-Dutch period. Oak was used less now and the use of walnut was Introduced. The Queen Ann style was more typical W Enallsh and at this time the irt of inlay made rapid progress The varying fortunes of France inder the reigns of Louis tlv Fourtenth. with its wild extrava ranee. Louis the Fifteenth, with the court poor from the former wastefulness, and the effemmato nature of the reign of Louis the Sixteenth wereindlcated. Napoleor with his imitation of the Roman Caesar, caused a return to the classic style of ancient Rome ano Greece. The Georgian period was the iolden era of furniture with Chip n styles. The Wesleyan movement with its demand for sincerity waa reflected In the furniture. Earnest ness and honesty were principles that were carried out In the craf of the furniture makers. The statesmen of George the Thlro were demanding honest work In their statesmanship and the work men were giving it In the work of their hands. Furniture of that per iod was made of well-seasoneil wood, carefully selected, made t last, and today functions Just as "atlsfactorlly as It did when made. Honest work done by honest men for honest people stands the stress and test of time. Modernistic Style In closing Mr. Gee referred to the style called modernistic. Th two most noteworthy feature of the twentieth tentury would pro bably prove to be the restlessness and boldness of the period. Notn Ing Is taktn for granted but all must be able to withstand the fearless questioning, the cross-ex amination, tha. ruthlessness of the Inquisitorial mind. The modern lsttc style answers to the popular demand. On motion of Miss Rothwell, sec jonded by Mr Halleran. a very hearty vote of thanks was accord ed Mr. Oee for his extremely In terestlng talk. Samples of furni ture Indicative' of some of the fca tures mentioned were shown and illustrations were also displayed. The meetlngiwas presided over by J. S. Wilson who also .was In chair for the business meeting which preceded .he address.
