It la a little "back room" postofflce in a general store in the hamlet bearing the name of Santa Claus. It was discovered by a wandering reporter several years ago. and since that time each Christmas has been a greater Job for the village poatmaster.People from all parts of the country sent letters to him to be remailed to addresses all over the world. It became necessary to send ad ditional clerks there for the holi day period and extra equipment to handle the enormous amount of Christmas mall and packages. The postmaster, formerly, paid on the basts of the number of stamps he sold annually, was elevated to a standard wage by congress. A report which caused the In dlana members of congress to pe tition Mr. Brown was that a large Rochester N.Y. business house notified the postofflce department that they expected to mall more than 1.000.000 pieces from the In diana village during the Christmas season. Something went wrong and the plans were changed, it Is said, and this caused Mr. Brown to declaxe that the name would be changed from Santa Clause to a less conspicuous designation to aveu Christmas mall rushes In the This aroused India runs, wha hold that Mr. Brown cannot change the name of the village and for that reason should net change the name of Its postofflce. For humanitarian reasons also they say that, if the litUe post of fice brings happiness each year to the children of the world, It is sf but lttUe concern to the postofflce officials in providing for additional help.
