We es- pecially invite you to call and let us show you our new goods, London, June 9.~—At the Im- perial Conference this morning Vernon Harcourt’s proposal for a standing committee consisting of the Colonial high commissioners and five representatives from the home office was withdrawn. The proposal was to make the com- mittee an advisory one, and not executive, therefore there was no necessity. to confer voting pawers. Sir Wilfrid Laurier who opposed it said he viewed with serious apprehension the interference of anybody whatever between the home government and the govern- ment of the Dominions. He ad- hered to the position he took four years ago, that the relations between the Dominions and the Mother Country should be carried on by themselves. C. B. PAID CUSTOMARY VISIT President Hays Called on Ar- thur Little There is one man Charles Mel- ville Hays, p4esident of the G. T. P., never fails to visit when he is in Prince Rupert, and the man in quéstion is Arthur Little, pro- prietor of the news stand near the wharf. “Well, how are you and how's business?”’ was the aslutation Mr. Little received from the railroad magnate soon after he landed here and the greeting was ac- companied by a warm handshake. Then the two talked over a score of matters and Mr. Hays bought several dozens of picture postcards of the city and district before he left Mr. Little. “See you again in August,” said Mr. Hays as he went away. “T’'ll be back again then.” SOME G.T.P. Disappointment was expressed by Alderman Newton last night |when he heard from Mr. D’Arcy | Tate that the G. T. P. Mr. Tate said that the appeals will be put forward only on their merits and not pressed, but he has left in- structions with Mr. Patmore to see them. Alderman Newton had understood that all these appeals would be dropped in view of the agreement come to on the assess- ment generally.
