It should be, as it were, a keeper of the public conscience.’’—Henry Watterson. DalILy EDITION. oe MONDAY, JUNE 12 ONE BENEFIT OF THE AGREEMENT There is one real benefit which the assessment agreement will bring, and that is to the lot owners in the far easterly portion of the city. As a result of the city accepting the two hundred feet of water- frontage at Fairview, the lands in the section of the city will be enor- mously increased in value. The reason for this is that the section is at present cut off from the remainder of the townsite by the stream which flows down Morse Creek. “it is on an island,”’ is the description of the property that one alderman innocently and truthfully enough gave to the News. At present it is not possible to reach the property on foot. To use the Fairview water-frontage at all it will be necessary for the city to construct a high level bridge, across Morse Creek to Section Two. This bridge will cost thousands of dollars. But it will improve the properties in Section Two by very many thousands of dollars. Who are the owners of the lots in Section Two? Three quarters of them are owned by the Grand Trunk, and one quarter by the Provincial Government. WANTS ITS ASSESSMENTS INCREASED As a pleasing contrast to the experience that Prince Rupert is having with the Grand Trunk Pacific over the assessment comes the dispute which the North Western and Omaha, and the Union Pacific are having with the city of Omaha over their assessments. In these cases the railways are fighting to have their assessments increased. The Union Pacific has turned in a schedule showing that the real value of their property within the city limits exceeds $16,000,000, whereas their assessed value is only a third of that sum. The North Western roads have put in a schedule which also makes the assessors valuation blush for shame. “It is nothing more than the real valuation of our railroad property,’’ declared Benjaimn T. White, the general attorney for the road. “Years ago the railroads of this state valued their property on an equivalent basis with what the owners of property near them were placing their valuations. Today we disregard the valuations of farmers and other property owners along our right-of-way and pay taxes on what it is worth to us. “It has certainly come to a pretty pass when a railroad is not permitted to pay taxes on an assessment of more than one-third of what it, itself, returns,’’ comments the local press. Of course, no one questions but that the railroads of Omaha, have a method in their madness, and do not expect in the end to be the loser by paying taxes on the real value of their property. But the incident is a refreshment to us. It also shows the remark- able manner in which railroads can alter their pleas to suit their in- terests. Prior to 1907 when the terminal tax law went into force in Nebraska, the railroads were as little loth as the G. T. P. to pay even a very low assessment without a struggle to get it still further reduced. JAP KILLING | CASE ADJOURNED Constable Forsyth Still in Hos- pital after Being Thrown 18 Feet by Accused. (Canadian Press Despatch) Leavenworth, Kan., Mrs. Carrie Nation, the famous Kansas saloon smasher and tem- pernace advocate, died at her thhome here last evening. Ailing for a long time, her end came peacefully. The cause of her death is said to be paralysis. This is the second time that the American press agencies have an- nounced the death of Mrs. Nation. The last time was nearly four months ago, when this journal in common with many others announced tie lamentable event. The later announcement corrobo- rates the main features of the former announcement.—Ed., Lots of talk about the lively cork-centred ball these days, but it is usually the supporters of the losing team that raise the kick. It might be mentioned by the way, that Ban Johnson, president of the American league has just announced that a change was not even being considered or is likely for the reason that the new ball has proved satisfactory. *+¢ Rod.
