Payrolls are needed even more than cheerfulness, but we cannot expect payrolls unless we are cheerful and optimistic. No one looking for a place to do business would voluntarily choose a place where the people were without hope. While we are not expecting good times to come suddenly they will certainly come again as soon as we have adapted ourselves to the conditions as they are today instead of trying to carry on as if there had been no slump. TOURIST BUSINESS While the business depression has brought about a slackening of the tourist business, we can still expect that many visitors will come this year and next and that the number will steadily increase after that. British Columbia will always be an attractive place for visitors and just now those in the United States who have cars can pay us a visit without much cost, especially at a time when their money is at a premium. And every visitor that comes will help to bring about a more stable monetary condition. Prince Rupert does not benefit from tourists to such an extent as the south because the highway remains uncompleted and the winter from which so much was hoped has been frittered away without any tangible results. Highway construction has not been advanced and there is little hope of any big movement in that direction in .the next two years. During that time we shall have to content ourselves with making the city attractive to those who come to us by water or by rail. BEAUTIFICATION At the risk of being tedious we must once more mention the desirability of planning now to improve our lawnS and gardens as the best means of making the city attractive The railway company has been doing its part in con-Ktmcting and keeping up' the gardens at Totem Pole Hill. But the real work is done by individuals, each bringing! his own garden into cultivation. C.ADSKI IS GONE Germany ha given much to the world. During the war we were all taught to hate Germany and everything German, but the war is but a memory and we are again seeing things in their true perspective. Germany gave the world Gadski, the great dramatic singer. While much of her fame came while she Was in the United States, she must always remain in history as a great German vocalist. She brought much joy to the world by means of her wonderful voice. Now she is gone and the voice remains only a memory or a gramaphone record. From these she will he long remembered. : I I II PrlllUPSS For Troubles due toArf D.ISTlf" IOU CONTl'n0J ACID stomach EXCESS acid is the common cause of indiftrstfeiu it' re wits in pain and Mxirness about two hours oflcr cuting.lt nurtfsphAsibkii' for most of the everyday uilinenls that people suffer; sick hesffache;' sluggishness, mused, biliousness, gas on the stomach, etc. The quick corrective is an alkali which will neutralise the acid. The Tuxis set the same pace as they did when they played the High' School last week and it was easily seen that the Merchants could not stand it. Well-timed combination SPORT NOTES Montreal anglers hove token exception to the recent statement of Dr. Charles .sheard, authority on optometry at the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minn., that fish are colorblind. One of the surest signs that fish do know colors when they see them, states J.
