CAN AD IAN- HAD I CANS AND CASES Railroading in France and Early Days in Canada M. A. Burbank Tells of Experiences With Canadian Railroad Troops In Ypres Salient and' Other Points "Railroading," with special re fcrence to locating work on thei Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and! to the building of light railroads in i France during the war, was the1 subject dealt with by M. A. Bur-j bank,,C. N. R. divisional engineer,! at the luncheon of the Rotary Club j yesterday with George Munro pre-1 siding. j Mr. Burbank told interesting stories of experiences in Western' Canada in the lonely parties that' located the line on the unsurveyed and uninhabited prairies. He came north from St. Louis to take a place ! as transit engineer and remained j with the company until the out break of war. He first enlisted as a ; member of the American Legion but I transferred later to the railway! troops under General Jack Stew- art, where he had the rank of lieutenant, and enlisted and took over twenty ratlwaymen from London with him. The story of the building of light railways In the Ypres salient and at other points proved most Interesting. He told of the work of the Canadlans'there, how the work was rushed under purely western con ditions and of the results obtained. So proficient did some of the Canadians become In handling wrecks and such work that when a train ?ot off the railway the first thing for the engineer to do was to pull the fires and. send for the Cana dians. No less interesting was the story of how Mr. Burbank became a ma- tor and orderly room incidents all of more or less personal character. The Letter Box REPLY TO "STUDENTS" LETTER Editor, Dally News: In my opinion the wise procedure ror Mr. Student would have been to inquire Into our system of taxation before criticizing the ratepayers vho never complained of extra load .hey had to carry on account of the inemployed. We are bled to death with taxes, land taxes, street im provement taxes, sewer taxes school taxes, etc. And now our homes are to be tax ed. Where arc we going to raise the noney to pay for it is more than I im able to guess. We are all out of work for g long time and the ma-orlty of us don't get relief from the city or province. Still we hold our own like men.. I know full well that Mr. Student earned more than the most of we poor unfortunates who had to do without the luxuries of life so as to "luild a home for ourselves and still i he would like to see us losing our! lomes and the money derived from I same go to his upkeep.
