It should be, aa it were, a keeper of the public conscience.’’—Henry Watterson. FRIDAY, JUNE 16 «in ' TO OUR SWEDISH FRIENDS—AN APOLOGY To a local newspaper, Mr. C. R. Anderson has written asking “the organ of woe” to apologise for calling him a Swede in a news report. Mr. Anderson is the gentleman who misunderstood the terms on which he contracted to deliver some piles to the city, and who was therefore granted some concessions by the city council last Monday night. With a delicate courtesy—such as is due from a guest to a host— Mr. Anderson refrained from naming ‘‘the organ of woe.’’ But ‘‘the organ of woe’ was not alone in making the incorrect report. The Daily News also referred to Mr. Anderson as a Swede, and hastens to offer an apology hefere being requested to. The incorrect designation was due to Alderman Smith, who asked that special consideration be given Anderson as he was a for- eigner, a hardworking fellow with a large family, and not accustomed to the English language. It was only on the representation that Mr. Anderson was a native of Sweden that the council, after some demur, consented to allow him special consideration. It was expressly stated, that the matter must not form a precedent for contractors to take jobs at small figures, and then get special privileges give 1 them. Now that Mr. Anderson has let the cat out of the bag, and it turns out that he is not the helpless foreigner groping among the intricacies of the English language that his friends represented him to be, but on the contrary an accomplished writer to the newspapers, perhaps the city council will see the advisability of withdrawing the privileges and holding him to the clear and unmistakable terms of his contract. Since we have read Mr. Anderson's letter as it appears in the columns of his favorite newspaper, we feel like offering an apology to our Swedish friends, for whom we have a very high respect as an intelligent, hard-working, and law-abiding people. We are glad to learn that Mr. Anderson is not a Swede. Perhaps it is as Mack sympathetically suggests, that Mr. Ander- son’s inability to understand the English language is one consequence of understudying his favorite newspaper's controversial style. DAILY EDITION. LLOYD GEORGE (From the British Weekly) Mr. Lloyd George is still a growing power in the State. Nor need there be any surprise at this, for in him certain qualities are almost uniquely combined. He has the genius for oratory as no other living politician possesses it.» He has one of the swiftest and cleanest cutting of intellects. He has formidable weapons for attack and defence. He has also the capacity of sustained labor and patient investigation, and appreciative, tolerant consideration for views that are not his own. But his great power lies in his charming and disarming simplicity. It was obvious in the House that both parties have. yielded completely to this spell. There is no more popular man in the House. No one can meet Mr. Lloyd George and dislike him. His amazing success has left his modesty and humility absolutely unshaken. His own party have the best reason to like him, for it is he, more that any other, who has countered the tendency of administrations to die with Par- liaments. and helped the Government to a third vote of confidence. But beyond that, all Liberals know him as a true and gallant comrade, a leader of well-proved courag., and an almost infallible insight. His opponents age not his enemies. They acknowledge his gifts and his sincerity, and they know that he could ill*be spared from our public life. Eilbeck, sheriff of Yukon Territory, who is on his way north again says it is no joke that report that various meetings of miners had declared for the annexation of Alaska to the Dom- ioion. Those men were in dead earnest, and he felt certain that if a vote on the question could be taken 95 per cent of the people iof Alaska would favor the prop- osition. They were, he said, sick and tired over the administration of law and feel that a white man cannot get a square deal when his interests conflict with powerful corporations. The feeling against the Washington Government was really bitter and unfavorable com- parisons with the administration of law in the Yukon were generally made. FORT GEORGE 'PHONES Extension of System Arranged for to Meet Needs of District Determined to keep abreast of the rapid development in_ this district the local telephone com- pany has let the contract for the installation of complete modern telephone exchanges here and at South Fort George. The systems will be independent, though con- nections can be established be- tween subscribers at either town. The new telephone extensions call for the investment of several thou- sands of dollars. Messages from the outside ad dressed to Fort George come to Blackwater Crossing on the Dom- inion telegraph line, from where they are transmitted by telephone over the local company’s wire, a distance of 60 miles.—Fort George Tribune. DAINTY ROOMS Pretty Bedrooms and Boudoirs P anned for This Summer Enameled furniture decorated with painted flowers and conven- tional designs in white or ivory are to be much used for bedrooms this summer.
