American Airmen Ascend To 60,000 Feet to Set Up New Record in Altitude Flight SkS&' N, J" Nov- 21 : (CP)-LieuL Commander m I. U . Settle and Major Chester L. Fortnoy, after achieving a new altitude reconl for a flight to the stratosphere, came down safely four miles northeast of here last night with their sealed hollow metal ball. Ascending from Akron, Ohio, early yesterday morning, Settle and Fortney six hours later had reached a new world's altitude record of 60,000 feot. From that height they were able to talk by wireless to the earth which they said they could not see. They were comfortably warm and able to work without gloves inside their ball although only an inch or sq of metal separated them from a temperature of many degrees below zero. Settle and Fortney started their downward ascent about 4 p.m. and some five hours later were safe back on earth.
