Daily News: May I ask for a little space In your paper on the subject of "Buying at Home. I lived for several years In ihe city of Prince Rupert and, while living there, learned to send for my needs to the nratl order houses. In my opinion it Is a lot the storekeepers' fault that the people send away for their goods. Some nln yeh'fsj ago. whf n I was hew at Prlnee Ru- j pert and had to buy my first pair of shoes I happened to be passing j a store that had shoes In the window and there was one" pair l thought would be my stee. the pftce j was $4.56. I wanted to buy them; but I f6und they dIB not fit my ffft. The storekeeper showed me anoaher pair that were $6.50. Now I needed a pair so of course. I told the storekeeper that I wanted the &56 ones, But I only had $5 in my purse. The storekeeper was keen on mkrg that sale. so he asked me to give htei the $6.00 and get the rest of th money. $1 JO, and then he wotfto give me the shoes. I paid the J&.60 down as he wanted me to and got my shoes after going home and back again with the rest of the money but it was the first and the last pair of shoes I bought there. Having to pay down the $5.00 was too much for me. After that I started to send away for my shoes and I know what I get for ny money. Yes. I send the money with the order so pay m advance 'nit I can send any goods back and et the money bock. Would I have tot my five dollars back had I decided not to buy those shoes? I might have but it might have been in unpleasant Job. Then I think the storekeepers do wrong in having their sales. It would be better re have things at a reasonable price aH the time. I have seen dress goods in the spring narked $1.7 per yard and the same roods in a mat! order catalogue for MM. Later in the season Use Prtwr Rupert store sold below e prtee if the mail order house. So why not het the prfce at the start lower and have everybody buy then and there? Prints for housedresses are ad vertised on certain days at four yards for $1.00. That is 36c per yard I have bought better goods four years before for 3Sc per yard at the nail order house. People can buy mly on certain days for mat price Other days it would be 30c or maybe more per yard. Would it not be better to set the price at 36c a yard nstead of somethnes four yards for i dollar and have people buy when ever they want and let them buy ne. two or three or as many yards s they need as one can buy from he mail order house One Saturday rrtaht I went down own fi buy a certain garment thai jsed te be advert toed at $1.60. It was a doHar day but this garment vas not hi the window. Thinking it might be on a table instde I went n but I eottkl not see It. The storekeeper asked me what I wanted and ' told hfm. Well. I bought that Bar-Dent for il.60. Did I get it at that irice because there was a dollar day it that store: or was the garment's vice $1.00 at all times? At the mall order house It was 95c. I am sure If oeople would know they get it at $1.00 at all times they would not lend away for the sake of five cents ind wait for the parcel 10 days. The same applies to many other things. I am living now In the Interior and am trying to make a living with farming but I find It hard as Prince Rupert people buy too much farm products from the south. The farmers were advised this fall to send their goods to McMeekln, the wholesaler but, In shipping to him, we do not know what we get, as it seems he has to sell at any price to compete with other wholesalers who get their vegetables from the south. If he can sell, he gets his 10", . If he can't sell on account of the southern products where do the f a t-m A r im ViArn in mat nf f) Mrtur n ' SHiitivia Mf ssviv VXs 1 1. wit i 4ivi n u lot of the farmers buy their groceries at Prince Rupert but do the farmers around Vancouver do that? Two ?iys ago there was a train with special rate and only 86 persons took advantage of It. Very few were farmers. If the farmers had any money I am lure the number would have been niuch lnrgef. Many a farmer's wife who does not get away from the farm often would sure have liked to use that special rate and visit Prince Rupert. Everybody knows how women like to shop but, as there Is no money or very little, well the most necessary .shopping Is done by mall order and not ut a visit at Prince Rupert FARMER'S WIFE.
